Women World Cup and England

Watching the England women is like ground-hog day and watching the men.

Fair enough, they won the game and that's what counts, but they ran out of steam after the break, looked weary and could not keep the ball. It was like a hot potato. Japan deserved something out of that game. We looked like rabbits in headlights.

Do we over-train? Is it the heat? Or just that we are not as good as we think we are?

Two well taken goals by White - beautifully taken to be fair - but blimey it was poor after half time.

It's mentality more than anything else. England aren't alone in doing it. A lot of sides at both International and Club level score a goal and then go into a more defensive mindset for at least a period of the game. Liverpool were guilty of it against Spurs in the Champions League final recently when they scored so early. I wouldn't say they became defensive, but they certainly didn't press the ball and go forward as quickly as they usually would. England's women were physically much superior to Japan and it was easy for them to think that 1 goal would be enough to win the game, which would always be a dangerous thing to do.

Physicality in the women's game seem so much more of an advantage than in the men's game?

After watching England women against Japan, I'd say sign Ellen White - one of the best strikers we'll see in an England shirt for a long time. 82 goals in 155 games at club level, never stops harassing the opposition, a defender's nightmare. Two chances, two goals on Wednesday, both great goals. We could do a lot worse!

I'm not sure about the b****y offside law either! It seems to change every few years.

It was disappointing and I'm amazed they kept 11 on the pitch. How on earth that last tackle wasn't a red card I'll never know.

But I think the Cameroon team are probably miles behind some of the others in terms of professionalism, knowing the rules and playing to the whistle. I'm not condoning what they did mind and I hope FIFA do something about their antics, including the captain who was suggesting that Houghton was time wasting! If I'd been Lucy Bronze I'd have had great difficulty not chinning her.

The main thing is - the team is through and it now gets very interesting with only the better teams left in it.

I'm not sure we've played that well overall but we're through. The men would have lost it and been out by now.

Did you see that second penalty the US got against Spain? Absolute joke.

I thought the girl was trying to take her foot away and the US player stumbled and then fell over. I don't recall anyone appealing for it.

But, as I said above, England got no penalty for a much worse challenge than that and no red card for that tackle at the end. It's bizarre.

How can they make such contrary and controversial decisions?

Worst of all is the fact that no-one knows what's going on half the time as play gets brought back 45 seconds later when everyone thinks they're playing on. The delays are absurd. It's ruining game after game.
