Women World Cup and England

Playing Scotland today. Already some controversy as England get a VAR penalty from which they go one up.

I've not watched the women's game much but I'm quite impressed by the skill level these days. As I write they've just gone 2 up with a well taken goal.

Yeah, another terrible VAR decision or rule or whatever you want to call it for the penalty, unintentional handball arm out but not in an unnatural position.

England are playing well and look to be technically and physical better than the majority of the teams I've seen and much better than Scotland.

The earlier game was like watching school kids in the playground with everyone following the ball around the pitch, quite odd to watch.

I'm really enjoying the World Cup - and it's so refreshing seeing players not rolling around "in agony", or collapsing, dramatically, at the touch of a feather. I've posted a similar article to this before - think it's fairly damning about the attitude of the people who run football: https://www.history.co.uk/article/when-women%E2%80%99s-football-was-bigger-than-men%E2%80%99s

USA 13 Thailand 0. Bit one-sided! The trouble was the USA players were all very big and the Thai players were all very little. I googled the tiny Thai right back and she is smaller than me!! To think - if I'd been born in Bangkok I could have been an international footballer!

I've been watching the Toulon tournament and the U20 one in Poland but they've both ended. There has been some enjoyable football has been on free to air telly recently. I don't subscribe to Premier Sports to be able to watch the Copa America but it's well past my bedtime anyway.

In terms of the WWC, USA look like they're head and shoulders above everyone else. I'm a bit disappointed by England who don't look as fluent and as settled a side as they should be. Bronze is wasted at right back.

Some of the judgement calls on VAR have been awful: the Brazil own goal which shouldn't have stood; the Sweden penalty for handball on Saturday and the USA penalty for shirt pulling outside the area yesterday.

I'm surprised with how VAR is being implemented in football. Having seen it work well in rugby union I was looking forward to seeing the football version, but I'm less than impressed so far. You should at least be able to listen to the dialogue between referee and VAR desk to understand why a decision has been made - in rugby even the crowd can listen in via RefLink. It would go a long way to defusing many of the criticisms of VAR.

Genuinely don't think US have allowed either opponent so far to get within 20 yards of their goal. Their strength in depth is nuts and they're head and shoulders better than anything else I've seen.

Their only danger is i) underestimating Spain if they play in the last 16, ii) being exploited by the pace of France in the 1/4.

Whoever wins that 1/4 final between US and France wins the whole thing imo, and I think US should be biggish favs regardless of 'home advantage'.

I'm enjoying this tournament far more than I thought I would.

The standard of play has been excellent and, given that this is true for most sports played by both men and women, the women more than make up for their comparative lack of physical strength with skill.

That's why I prefer to watch women's tennis rather than the men, and this is pushing me a long way to say the same about football.

13-0 in a World Cup final tournament.

Farcical.

Only because the women's game hasn't yet developed to the level that the men's game has.

If Thailand is the best that East Asia can produce it's down to the lack of competition. This will change and subsequent World Cups will be a lot closer.
