North/ South Vale and Stoke divide?

Recommended Posts

Slightly different thread topic, but was having a chat with a bloke from work about this... historically how big would you say there is a geographical divide in the city between Vale and Stoke fans?

Nearly all Vale fans I’ve known have lived North of the city. Obviously now, there is a lot more Stoke throughout the city.

I come from the South side of the city. My dad was originally a supporter of both clubs but moved increasingly towards Vale so that by the time I came around the first team was the Vale.

Even so, we used to do that Potteries thing of going to both clubs in the early 80s - we'd go to the odd Stoke match in the old first division (I remember them getting thrashed by Wolves) and of course to Vale home games too.

Living in Porthill/Bradwell my whole life (46 years), it was probably a 70/30 split in Vales favour but during the past 10 years it has probably swung 70/30 the opposite way but hopefully with the "new era" that can be changed...

Living in Hanley when we played in Hanley, things were a little different, Stokies would drop thier wives by the shops and off to the Vale, then meet up later for the flicks. Vale fans would visit the Vic to see the big away teams the only way to see the big stars ,( Spurs putting 6 past them I remember). Not the animosity in those days, lots went to see both teams, football being more affordable.

I lived in a small row of 6 houses in Wolstanton and one of my 1st memories was seeing the 'V' floodlights across the A500 valley. Of the 6 houses I recall only 1 Stoke supporting family living there during 20 odd years and at one point 5 of the 6 houses were occupied by Vale supporting families. Nothing to do with the view either I guess.

I'm indebted to one of them as they took me to Vale in my early teenage years, my dad really disliked football, and I've wasted my Saturdays from that day forward:thumbs:

Brought up in Trent Vale where there was a massive 95/05% Stoke/Vale split. My family were all Stoke fanatics and my parents would not ever believe I wanted to watch the Vale.

Went on to live in Trentham, again a big 80/20% Stoke/Vale split and then onto Stone where it was similar.

Now graduated to Penkridge where I am virtually a lone Valiant, although I know other Vale fans live nearby in Brewood, Wolverhampton etc.

Proud to vocalise my support for our great Club, wherever I live but like others, am now hopeful of our new owners desire to put us back on the map and maybe we can attract more youngsters to our fold to carry on the tradition.

And the Odd Vale fan in Stafford. Got a nice ring to it, maybe the name for a new Vale website:smile:

Yes, I met Greg and his son Lewis several times at away games and they live in Stafford.

There’s at least another 4 who work at st George’s Hospital, some might say that’s apt when you’re a vale fan.
