Good Book Thread

Just started the new book by Mark Haddon, the man who wrote The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. So far it's so so good. The opening chapter was so gripping, detailing a heavily pregnant woman taking a (final) flight across the channel in a small private plane along with the pilot (obvs) and his young son ("He will be dead in two hours").

My wife and son are visiting relatives for a couple of days so I get the very rare luxury of being able to read in bed. There was a time when I'd have seized this opportunity to get leathered or invite friends over but now I just look forward to an early night and a book, like a square.

Just started Hush Hush by Mel Sherratt - a crime novel about a serial killer set in Stoke! Will let you know!

Well I enjoyed it! It's a typical crime/whodunit but the setting is very local - she even mentions Endon High School at one point! Mel Sherratt is one of the guests at the Festival in the Factory this week so I'm going to have a listen.

Reading Pat Barker's The Silence of the Girls at the moment. It's another retelling of a Greek Myth, this time The Iliad. I was put off this for ages as, as with The Porpoise, I didn't really know the original source text. However, I'm glad I got it as it's brilliant.

This is a test please ignore

I've just read Anthony Beevors book on D Day.  It highlights the amount of chaos created by bad decision making and in particular, the number of deaths on both sides caused by friendly fire.  And my Dad was over there at the time.

Black Water Lilies is really seriously good. But don't read reviews or discuss it in advance. That would spoil it. Read it pure and natural. Best book I've read for a for many a long while.

Also very much liked Live from Golgotha (Vidal)

Postman Always rings twice (Cain)

Vernon God Little (Pierre)

Confederacy of Dunces (Toole)

and many more. Nothing like a good book.

The Testaments is as good as always from Margaret Atwood (and very appropriate in these times). If you've not come across her works then I can highly recommend them. It's difficult to pick some of her books out as its a high standard but the Handmaid's Tale (like Game of Thrones the plot has been hugely changed in the TV series - I prefer the book), Alias Grace or The Blind Assassin are well worth your time.
