Askey ,Shrewsbury failure or....

That’s in the ball park of what the EFL reckon is a healthy wage to turnover ratio. Obviously how big the budget is in absolute terms depends on the Shrews’ turnover.

The figure will also be for the previous season when Hurst got them to the play off final before leaving to take the Ipswich job. Arguably they overachieved that season which set a certain level of expectation when Askey joined.

It looked like Askey was turning it around (3 of his 4 league wins came in his last 6 league games). They sacked him after they drew with Salford in the cup, which on the face of it probably wasn't a sackable result.

There was a mass exodus before Askey took the job, and it meant him having to bring 16 players in. Now, considering he's new at the club and hasn't decided he wanted the players remaining at the club that can't have been an easy situation. Expectations were high and unrealistic, and Askey was a victim of that.

Askey is talking about bringing slightly less players in this summer, but he's had a few months to assess our squad before making those decisions which is better. His teams tend to start slow, I just checked the Macc promotion season and they only won 1 out of their first 5 games. So it's going to be about patience to start with. There were moments where we played some really nice football in March I thought. If we can get that going then we can start to make some progress.

We'll never know the full picture and I always defer to fans of a club before casting judgement, but...

Shrewsbury vastly, vastly overachieved the season prior considering their budget. Hurst was poached and Askey brought in, having no FL experience. They lost Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan on the 8th August, their two key players, after the first game, leaving little time for replacements. Abu Ogogo and Alex Rodman had previously rejected contract offers. It looks as if Askey had to deal with 12 players in and 12 players out, 2 of them after the start of the season. As mentioned, they did show an upturn in form prior to his sacking.

For whatever reason, Shrewsbury expected more than what he provided. He obviously did underperform, but when he was sacked they were 18th and they finished 18th

Other posters have highlighted the problems he inherited. Additionally, I think he made a mistake in taking George Pilkington with him as first team coach. George had no previous experience of coaching and had not played at that level for 10 years or more. George was learning his trade and would not have been able to make an immediate and big impact with no coaching background to fall back on.

Interestingly, John Askey has learned from that with his appointment of Dave Kevan as his coach at Vale. I suspect that John realised he was isolated at Shrewsbury and he needed good solid experience around him, which he now has with Dave and also John Rudge to call on.

The graphic is for ALL wages (player and no-player). The 60% EFL threshold is for player wages only and does not include bonuses etc.
