Bury North MP James Frith has said he plans to put forward a proposal to the EFL by 20 September in a bid to have Bury reinstated to League Two in 2020-21.

The Shakers, who were in League One, were expelled from the EFL last week.

"We believe it is time to put forward a fair resolution that the club, the town and the wider game can unite around," Frith said.

Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham has also backed the proposal.

He told BBC sports editor Dan Roan: "We need to try and get a way forward for Bury FC that the fans, town and wider football family can get behind, and that's what we've been discussing.

"We recognise the mismanagement that has put Bury in this situation, so we understand EFL needs to take action, but feel the punishment is unduly harsh and what we've developed today is a proposal to try and persuade the other clubs that Bury should remain a Football League club, but entering League Two for next season."

Bury's 125-year membership of the Football League was ended after a proposed takeover bid from potential owners C&N Sporting Risk collapsed.

Following takeover talks with club owner Steve Dale that had moved slowly all summer, the Gigg Lane club had already cancelled their first five league games and been thrown out of the EFL Cup, for non-fulfilment of a first-round fixture.

Bury's expulsion means that three clubs, rather than four, will be relegated from League One this season and just one, instead of two, from League Two.

The saga continues. Perhaps they should seek advice from AFC Wimbledon on how it’s done.

Should start further down, plus it will be difficult for the club to survive with no income and the current debts (if the CVA stays in place) for 9 months anyway so assumption is they would liquidate and have to reform ruling League Two out, plus of course they have no new ownership sorted either.

Also, what would it tell other clubs. Gamble the future of the club, gamble with the livelihoods of the many businesses connected with the club and town and the worst that will happen is a 12 month break from the league. We shouldn't be providing them with a magic reset button. Sad as it is, they need to go down to (at least near) the bottom of the pyramid.

Latest from Sky.

The EFL have agreed to discuss the matter of Bury's potential re-entry into the Football League following their expulsion last week.

I totally agree with you. Of course, I'm sad to see the demise of a long-standing member of the fottball league, but signing so many players that they couldn't afford is, after all, a type of cheating and now they're suffering the consequence of not living within their budget.  Before people beome too sentimental, I remember that around the time they signed Tom Pope from us Bury had no less than 9 centre forwards in their squad--even Man Utd at that time only had four!  That if nothing else illustrates the irresponsible gamble that the club was taking and unfortunately the laws of money and mathematics have now intervened!

It would be unreal if they're allowed back. Everyone would do it. Given that they would go down anyway unless they recovered the minus 12, there would literally be no punishment.

Depends what other league chairmen/chairwomen think. If they think it is a harsh expulsion, why not put them in position 24 in L2, then they would be in the national league in 20/21. Although I do not see any reason why they should not be treated any differently..

If they are allowed back it is a nonsense, they knew the rules.

Numerous opportunities (some may have been dismissed by Dale before deemed viable) but failed to get anything done by the deadline through their own ineptitude.

The EFL has and it seems will continue to open a can of worms.

I feel for the fans and the issue is still raw. But you cannot change a rule after it has been broken to fix it.

You can change a process to make sure it doesnt happen again.

I wonder Barry. MPs involved, mayor of Manc etc. Where were they weeks or months ago? Probably celebrating Dale’s success.

I know the EFL should have done loads more but that’s not the reason they’re broke. They’ve been a basket case club for years.

They should accept their fate (most sympathy will now wane following this) rebuild and move on. The EFL likewise.
