My take on the article is that the 15 year has an old head on young shoulders. What he needs is a mature head to advise him rather better than hitherto.

At that age it's not talent, it's potential. If teams want to pay for youngsters then so be it and chuck a clause in there relating to senior appearances.

Huddersfield are one of those clubs like Brentford who realised their academy couldn't compete with the more conventional ones the bigger clubs run, so they scrapped a lot of their lower age teams and they now only take on players post 16.

 

These days, if one of your players gets poached there's nothing that you can do. The fees these days are based on a set formula which the bigger clubs managed to get set at a low level in exchange for a larger solidarity payment across the board.

It appears clubs like ours don't even have the choice to keep our academy youngsters. The premier league have instigated a rule that lower league clubs like ours must release those young stars if a premiership club comes knocking. More reasons to hate the Premiership.

Bit depressing this. Remember Mark Chamberlain going to Stoke, but at least he played a few games and he went on to be an international.

Watched him in his debut for Stoke against Arsenal and Kenny Sansom didn't know what to do with him. The academy lads are a different case as they probably won't be ready for first team football at any level for a few years at least. Even then they'll probably be farmed out to lower league sides to prove their worth before being moved up or moved on.

 

The difference between then and now is the selling club don't have the benefit of receiving market value for the developed player. Another example of the Greed Is Good league making the rules to suit themselves.
