Lucky folk. Just make sure we're still in it by the time I go to Old Trafford in September.

What do we think of the England XI? I suppose whoever they'd picked we'd be arguing the toss regardless but I can't help but feel for Sam Curran who has been in good form. I suppose it's Woakes' home ground. Ali is lucky too. There's not much we can do about the batting but we do look vulnerable. Maybe the best way is to throw the bat at it like a one day game and hope that Roy and Burns can get us to 50 before getting out. I'd bite off your hand for that. Burns has been out of form but we have few others any better.

They'll have three faster bowlers and Starc is brilliant on his day. Let's hope it's a green pitch and cloudy and we can have them at 60-5 by lunch. They can't play a moving red ball so if the groundsman has done his bit Jimmy will do the rest but I wish our batters were in better form.

It's in the balance isn't it. I think it's all down to who rises to the occasion. The England batting is a worry but I don't think the Aussie batting looks in great shape either so it's down to who has the best bowling attack. If, as suggested, the ball has been picked specifically for its ability to swing then I'd agree with Glenn McGrath that Anderson is key...

With Foakes doing well in the Tests he has played I'm always bemused that England didn't simply recreate their WC opening pair. Put in Bairstow as a specialist bat and opening with Roy (with Foakes in at seven as a wicket keeper). The Roy/Bairstow partnership was arguably key to England's WC success (albeit in the one-day format) but I just think that if that opening pair get in and get set they can take the game away from the opposition. Fair enough it may also fail on occasions but failure is hardly any different from the other insipid partnerships England have tried.Michael Vaughan said at one point during the World Cup that he would go with Bairstow and Roy and if its good enough for him, it is for me too...

Losing Jimmy is a big blow. If he'd bowled all morning they'd be 5 down now and facing defeat but as it is we might have lost him for the entire game (and more) and that could be a terrible blow from which we'll struggle to recover. Sad news. Fingers crossed for him.

True - but miraculously we seems to have them on the rack while a bowler down...

Poor decisions from the selectors and the captain to include Anderson in the XI. He’s clearly been struggling with injury for a while and to only last 4 overs is proof that he wasn’t fit.

What happens now ? It’s difficult to see how he can be selected for the 2nd test and any other test for that matter, with the treat that he may break down again.

One of the worst days bowling from Stokes that I can remember from any England pace man in recent years.

Woakes & Broad did all and more that could be asked of them, but Stokes offered little, if any, support.

From 122/8, to the current situation should not happen. Root is a fantastic player, but his captaincy and leadership leaves a lot to be desired.

i think you make a reasonable point about Root. We do get these spells where we allow the game to drift away from us, notwithstanding the magnificent batting from Smith.

Stokes' bowling hasn't been great for a while and with Jimmy injured we really needed him to step up to the plate. It'll be the same in the second innings.

Siddle was very gritty. Hats off to him. Smith too - though he's still a cheat in my eyes.

The Aussies often seem to fight like tigers when they're in trouble. You can't see us recovering from 120/8 but they very often do it.

You can't help but think it was a massive opportunity missed and they ought to have been back in the hutch for 150. We shall see.
