Absolute nonsense.

Norman, through no work of his own, lucked into around £4m+ in unbudgeted revenue. By gate receipts and TV money, I am referring to the unusual Stoke Checkatrade and Sunderland FA Cup windfall (with the latter being on BT). As a result, we had far higher expectations of club expenditure than what we saw.

Carol and Kevin have come into the club with a dwindling fanbase and vast amounts of work to do off the field. They've had to pay WELL above market value and now have a job on their hands to turn what was a loss-making enterprise (in terms of monthly income and expenditure under Norman, once the unbudgeted revenue has dried up). As a result, we have far lower expectations of club expenditure than under the previous regime. Anything else would be silly.

On what basis are we one of the bigger teams? A good spell nearly 30 years ago? A big, crumbling, empty stadium? A middle of the road average attendance? The 13th largest budget? We've just finished 20th twice in a row. We are not one of the more attractive teams in this division based on the achievements of John Rudge in the 1990s. No one apart from us cares.

People expecting us to challenge the playoffs on the basis of merit are going to be very, very disappointed, and have massively underestimated how shafted our club is. We nearly went into non-league twice in a row.

What are they supposed to buy these players with? What happens if your simple plan doesn't work, and suddenly we're fouling foul of FFP and face insolvency? Business and a community asset like Vale isn't to be gambled on the reductive and very basic premise of 'buy players and fans will magic themselves out of thin air'. Football fans, and Stoke on Trent people, are not going to rush to get a ST because we've signed an established League 2 journeyman like Reuben Reid, for example. They don't care enough.

You often talk sense but that above post mate is amongst the most nonsensical things I've read on here since the takeover. You're advocated a Bury-esque splurge on players with no sustainable revenue to support it, on the basis that fans, from somewhere, will spend £300 on ST based on the signing of what would most probably be a League 1/League 2 striker. Players aren't going to join us because we used to be good, and we're often seen as one of the more tinpot clubs around. The three teams who went up this season all spent vast amounts, and one is on the verge of liquidation as a consequence. There is an amount of time it is going to take to get us on an even footing before we start splurging.

Common sense and intelligent post alert!

Joe, I believe that you have established yourself as one of the handful of consistently sensible posters on OVF that demonstrates balanced thoughts and opinions.

Post of the year, medal awarded for the resurface of the long forgotten common sense !

Hannant is from that area, Norwich way, so suits him. Wonder what their fans think, signing a freebie from us

They're not really that impressed, signing a player released by a fellow struggling club, but they know they're skint!

They know what to expect - a bustling player with plenty of effort but not that much in terms of end product. He may though do a bit better there than here because his fellow midfield players (Amoo, Lamb, Maris and Brown) may give him a bit more to play off. Their problem wasn't their midfield, it was their forwards (only scored one more than us) and their defence (second worse GD). Not sure how much game time he will see.

PS Amoo would be a really good signing for us but guess we can't afford him either!

Great post that and spot on .

Its a massive job and to build a fanbase back up is winning football matches and having a club where folk wanna go and enjoy there pastime .

If kev and carol get there customer relations right then thats a start .

On the pitch well thats down to the group of players chosen to put performances in where folk can not wait to go again.

As for supporters like myself who very rarely attend no more due to no longer been interested due to very poor in the main overall performance levels of players and having no sleep after finishing work at 6a.m and feeling totally robbed of my saturdays by getting up for something which didnt give me any satisfaction most saturdays yet we expected keep going and supporting something which was draining and inept .

Id like other fans not feel how i do and smiles be all around the club as everyones pulling in the same direction and its showing in the desire application and skill level on the field whats required .

A better run club where the Vale are seen in a good light and the only curtesy is shown to the visiting directors fans etc off the pitch and not on it

Good move for Hornby that. Their other keeper is Richard O'Donnell who the fans don't seem to be keen on so there is a reasonable chance he gets to the start. With Brown in our nets he didn't have a prayer for the next 2 years.

Call me cynical but I believe if a player hasn't signed up to us by now they are probably on their way. Legge, Conlon, Worrall all signed up within days; Manny I feel has had his head turned. Would love to be proven wrong.

Hornby needs one of those twists of fate , like the number one sent off or injured.

He might then be able to keep the shirt.

As others have said Brown is almost irreplaceable to us.

In the grand scheme of things not a loss as such but now Askey has got to find a keeper willing to be second string. Not easy .

Also the Bradford bench and wages will be more appealing than our bench and wages .
