Who should we sign?

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit baffled that there was an announcement 2 days ago that we are in talks with a striker and there has been nothing since.

It's always frustrating waiting for players to join us in the close season. Always.

Don't players' contracts run out at the end of June - which is when things start to move more rapidly?

The better ones will play the field and hold out for as long as they can in the hope that someone will offer them a bit more.

I still think he would be worth a go. I get he’s had injuries but he was fantastic the first loan spell with us. If he’s stays fit he’s the best centre back in this league imo.

That's the crux, he doesn't! Same problem as Ryan Inniss. Not worth the risk.

Richie Bennett is a 28 L2 striker, but I wouldn't describe him as "mobile" as Askey alluded to the type of strikers he wants to sign.

He's a 6'4 target man.

I'd be fairly happy with that if we get some good wingers to supply him.

Regarding the search for pace upfront...

Looking at the recent Sentinel reports, if Askey is going to pick a 4-3-3 formation then it's the two wide forwards who provide the pace and the potential new pacy arrivals would be cover/competition for Worrall/Montano. The man in the centre needs to be on the end of things. Pope will surely be first choice but I could understand if they go for a younger targetman to act as back-up / competition.

It would be good to have a striker who runs the channels as well as being a target man.

Far more difficult to contain as it keeps defenders guessing.

We don't get this particular variation from Pope, although he has plenty strengths in other areas.

Agree. Stoke haven't signed anyone yet. There's always one club, this year Northampton, that go mental and sign 10 players in a week, blowing their budget, which heightens people's expectations of when signings will materialise.

It'd be nice to get a bigger name in but there is really no rush.

I think Bennett and then a pacier forward to compete for the striker spot, as well as allowing us to mix it up and go two up top would make sense.

Then, a 'wide forward' which seems to be all the rage these days; thinking of a Cowan Hall or Amoo type to contribute off the wing.

Bennett and either Amoo or Cowan-Hall would be good business, but I'm surprised that George Maris hasn't been mentioned. Another Cambridge player whose contract is up.

Maris would be a great signing but i can’t see him coming, from cambridge fans it seems as though he could be heading to league one possibly a northern league 1 team. would be a great combination of Maris, Joyce and Oyeleke though

Player contracts usually run until 30 June so new contracts don't actually start until 1 July. Definitely not the time to panic about low number of signings!

Also, a lot of players go on holiday; Ben Whitfield has barely been in Britain since the end of the season. He is obviously one who needs to find a new club.

We will have a competitive squad by the time the season starts. The owners will spend as much more as prudentially possible. It'd be fantastic to boost ST sales with a raft a big name signings, but off the top of my head I struggle to name a viable target who would convince a stay-away to come back, if the news of the new owners hadn't done so already.

I get the frustrations though. We all like signings.

Think Maris will be out of our range.

Joyce, Conlon, and a 100% Manny will suffice for me, with Burgess, Lloyd, and maybe another DM as rotation. As a trio they looked much improved under Askey in a very short space of time and knocked it about very nicely on occasion. A full pre-season of Askey's style and Manny being fully fit should have them clicking.

A big name midfielder would be superb but I'd prefer the money to be spent up top.

If the three you mention play every week then there’s not a chance they will score ten between the three of them.

So I hope we get two wide men who will score and create because if not it’s gonna be a long season as where are the goals coming from?

I am hoping for a first choice striker with Pope being the back up. Nothing against Pope but think we need more mobility in the central position as well as wide. Pope did well making an impact from the bench when returning from injury last season and hecwpuld be a great option to throw on to mix it up where needed.

Additionally we need a couple of wide forwards with at least one being a nailed on first-teamer - probably on the left-side. The other to provide serious competition for Worrall whose form under Askey has been great but simply doesn't score enough goals for the role he plays.

The other position for me would be s central attacking midfielder - either a box to box one that gets beyond the striker and bags a few or a specific no.10 type role. We simply dont score enough goals so the recruiment in these positions above all others will dictate what type of season we will have.

MAybe he has had a better offer, that is always the risk of reporting things before they are certain.

I thought the delay was because we were going to announce a couple of signings together?

No it wasn’t

The club official account said they were about to announce a signing.

It then disappeared.
