Who should we sign?

Kieran Kennedy signed from Wrexham.

Played under Askey at Macclesfield.

Another centre half no taller than 6'0 (along with Smith and Crookes).

Poor signing again in my opinion.

Don't know anything about this lad so can't comment on him specifically but I wonder if we'll sign anyone that hasn't played under Askey before?!

(....or have I been in a coma for the last couple of months, and we actually got relegated and are now aiming to get out of the National League!)

Askey's philosophy / speciality is building a team of younger, technically gifted lads who can play a bit.

On the plus side this is cost effective, which is what we need. As well as hopefully being an a good style of play to watch.

The downsides are that you lack the benefits of experience and physical presence and have to rely on largely unproven players. That is because someone with those qualities would cost money, which is something we don't have a lot of right now.

Askey has a plan and is following that plan by signing the appropriate players. It's not going to guarantee us instant success, but when you don't have a top three budget there are no guarantees.

On paper this lad might seem like a Joe Davis type of signing, but we have to have faith that Askey knows his abilities and how to get the best out of them. A team that is better than the sum of it's parts, hopefully.

What evidence you basing that opinion on?

We're getting to that stage again where if a Vale fan doesn't recognise a player, they're not happy, despite the vast majority having average-poor knowledge of lower league players that aren't forwards.

This lad has pedigree (Man City youth, England u19 international, 20+ games in the SPL) and offers something neither Legge or Smith can do; pass a football.

Once again, statistically we had one of the best defences in the country, let alone the league last season. Signing a young centre half with top level pedigree who offers something different to what we already have is not a bad move.

If people are expecting a litany of 28 year olds who they 'recognise' then they're going to be disappointed. We just finished 20th, twice, and Norman has ran off with all the money. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The club is literally 3 weeks into a resusciation process. We nearly went bump on the 5th May. Literally, nearly went to adminstration and then a strong chance of liquidation as Norman was the sole creditor.

Ryan Lloyd is going to sign soon and I'm convinced there will be literal tears in Burslem. There's one gent on Twitter, who I won't name, who is angry about every single rumour (Crooks, Clarke, Lloyd, this lad, Mark Marshall). No one is good enough, he probably won't get a season ticket the signings are so bad. This is the same bloke who repeatedly messaged me to say Black and Gold were getting outplayed by Norman and we'd ballsed up.

Sick of being a broken record now. The club is shafted. We aren't going to chase experienced big names. I don't know if there is collective amnesia or Port Vale fans are the most impatient fans on the planet. What is winding me up is people were keen to give Bruno, Reggie, Chris Mbamba 'time' depsite them coming in from Scandinavian and Dutch pronvincial leagues, and wouldn't kick off at Norman until it was nearly too late, but are more than happy to stick the foot in straight away to these new signings.

Very well said...

I can guess who you are talking about on Twitter. If it’s the same one he was made to look a right fool after criticising Crookes... his defence was that Crookes should be able to take it and he welcomed criticism of himself as it made him stronger.

Which was hilarious because when one bloke criticised his opinion he started swearing and losing it like a 5 yr old and deleted all the tweets.

Some people are only happy when they are unhappy!

On Kennedy...

Played 22 games in the Scottish prem

Askey says he is different to what we have offering options

Wrexham fans disappointed they couldn’t secure him.

They say he is a real threat from set pieces and likes to play the ball out from the back

An affordable, known, backup defender.

Welcome Kieran

Up the vale!

One day I'll break it down for some of these people just how close we all came to losing Port Vale entirely. Bump. Kablamo. Re-forming in the 11th tier, battling to draws against Stafford Rangers Reserves.

There needs to be a serious re-alignment of expectations.

At least we know that they are Askey signings and not some greedy fat owners who has now left the building

That's good to hear as they were one of the better teams in that League.

As a counter I wonder what Shrewsbury fans' opinions of him are? (from the little they saw of him as he got bombed out of there very quickly - similar to Callum Howe here maybe? i.e. clearly does well in the National League but couldn't cut it in League football)

Are you sure about him being a backup defender? Only, I don't see Legge being up to it much longer, or certainly for large parts of the season, which would leave us with a central defensive partnership of Smith & Kennedy - not ideal in terms of height & physicality for the 4th Division (so I can see the point that valeparklife was making in his post).

You cant complete a jigsaw without the outside pieces. Weve signed players so far who Askey knows, trusts and who know exactly what style JA wants to play next season. I'm sure the marquee signings that some fans want are being talked to but we arent the most sort after club given our past recent history but the good times will be back if only we can pull together. KTF.

Fair points, it’s a shame he never got the chance to play league 2 after his performances in his promotion season.

Joining a league 1 side who nearly went up must have been a step too far.

Agree what you are saying about Legge... it will be interesting to see what Askey goes with.
