Who should we sign?

Lawrie Wilson played loads of games for then promoted Bolton before signing for us too...

i don't know how he passed the medical. He was clearly way off the fitness needed when he came to Port Vale. i don't just mean running and strength, there was an impediment to his technical ability as well. Just should never have been signed. At this level, can't afford mistakes like that with the budget available. In contrast Crookes looks a good signing, trying to move up in the game, and proven fitness, as opposed to someone trying to eke out a career at a ever lower levels season on season.

What I've noticed with other clubs signings over the past few windows, is the carousel of players and which clubs they seem to go to.

Players released by teams in the bottom half, tends to get signed up by other teams in the bottom half or to the National League (of course there is always one or two that moves up a league), but in general, players move sideways when they sign for a new club. Where as players released by the top half clubs, tend to move to another top half club or a League 1 club.

Just look at our released list; Hannant to Cambridge, Hornby to Bradford, Boot to Solihull etc.

It's like players just have a 'natural' level. Of course there are many other factors to this as well; economy, reputation etc.

I've just noticed it a lot and find it a bit peculiar

The gulf in wages between leagues means movement down a division is not that common. Not sure it's that different to the 70s and 80s. There's always tended to be a merry-go-round. Most players tend to stick within a 140 mile radius of home, so it tends to be the same players at clubs not that far apart.

Promoted from league 1 and played around 30 games. Not sure what point your trying to make?

Read my posts and you will see. My original post was in response to someone calling Lloyd a benchwarmer and advocating that we sign Mark Marshall instead. I was simply pointing out that Lloyd had started more games than Marshall who had been a benchwarmer all season.

A benchwarmer that still played 30 times and in a side promoted from the league above. Not comparable.

Who only started 6 of them in the league

Didn’t play for months

Came back for this run where he averaged 15 minutes as a late sub

And bookended the season not playing again

This is a strange debate to be had considering both Lloyd and Marshall have played for the club before so are known quantities. There is no suggestion we are even in for Marshall. Is this all because EMR called Lloyd a benchwarmer?

Even at 32 I know who I'd take having seen them both play. M M won't play outside the South East again so I agree it's a pointless debate.

In a team that has been promoted from league one not surviving league two on the last day of the season.

There is absalutley no comparison to make.

Need a goalie who is good and can push Brown but happy to sit on the bench and play in reserve games. It needs someone with a viable profile for that situation. That could be a young keeper coming through the youth team or someone released looking to continue in the game or an older keeper coming to the end who wants to carry on for another year. The trick is, I guess, if Brown got injured and was out for several weeks and months the reserve does have to be good enough for this level of football. I never thought Ryan Boot was good enough, though to be fair he couldn't be far short having been first choice for Solihull Moors last season who challenged for promotion in the National League.
