We've got Manny, Joyce, Conlon and Burgess competing for places in the middle of the park and Ryan Lloyd as a utility midfielder/defender. I think we'll be ok there.

We've also got Worrall and I wouldn't be surprised if Arthur plays him on the right of a midfield three with Amoo on the right of a front three. That would give opposition defences something to really think about. The unresolved puzzle is what Arthur will do if Whitfield or Rawlinson, or both, leave. That would presumably give him the option of recruiting Durrell, which would make us even more competitive. Isn't it nice, in the new season, to be able to speculate like we never could under our previous never to be missed owner? 😀

We obviously need a back up keeper for sure. Hopefully someone younger who ca learn. Rather have a loanee for a year than sign another older keeper on a wedge.

Defensively Askey wants a RB but personally I think we're more in need of a left Back. On the right we have Gibbons as a wing back whilst Kennedy and Rawlinson (whilst here) have played RB before and can cover more defensively. On the left we have Crookes who offers that defensive side, but no attacking wing back - unless you count Monty. I do think he could do a job there but I'd rather us has a natural left wing back in the squad. Campbell-Gordan fills that hole surely he isn't ready to go straight in? Only seen him at Leek and he looked like what he is (to me anyway).

The midfield one is interesting because in Askey's preferred 4-3-3 there is room for:

 - RCM: Oyeleke/Burgess

 - CDM: Joyce

 - LCM: Conlon/Lloyd

That to me says we're missing a CDM cover. Oyeleke played that role against Leek but I'd much prefer him further up the pitch. As far as no.10's go we have Trickett-Smith who could be a good impact player but I don't see Askey starting with one.

Wingers and Strikers I'd say are done now although I'd be happy if Browne signed. Durrell looks decent but for me is a bad age so it's too short term a signing.

Not quite sure we needed wiki on Anyon but I guess some won't know him.

For me a hungry young keeper is the way to go not a journeyman.

Maddison seems to of been preferred to the lad from Stoke.

But Anyon? It's a no from me

Still remember Anyon dropping that corner into the net against Exeter under Glover!

A young keeper to learn alongside someone like Brown with the view to potentially succeeding him in the next 2 or 3 years would be more sensible!

Did not Conlon play a number of games at CDM when Joyce was out and has an extended passing range as a deep playmaker but also along with Oyeleke and Burgess on the right Worrall can play RCM then on the left as back up for Lloyd both Trickett-Smith and Hurst can play LCM......which would make eight players for three starting spots and good competition and cover.

As for right back Gibbons/Cummings seems like sound competition with Rawlinson and Kennedy as emergency cover while Crookes looks like first choice left back although Montano was something of a revelation at left back and added something in

terms of attacking play while being generally sound defensively and Hurst if signed up has been playing left back as well not

to forget Lloyd is tried and trusted cover there as well.

It does seem odd that Durrell is still available and has not signed for anyone yet and is another like Worrall who can play wide

in a front three or in a midfield three and like Worrall is a class player at this level....suppose much depends on the budget.....

but in terms of the GK/RB/Winger that Askey is after Madison/Cummings/Brown must be favourites to sign and Askey seems

keen to sign Hurst which probably concludes the squad unless Thomas upfront is also offered something and with Askey wanting a small squad it doesn't leave much room for loan players.

If Whitfield gets shipped out I’d imagine getting Grant in would be a viable option. Shrewsbury would probably be glad to get rid on a free transfer to get him off the payroll. I am pretty confident that one of the factors in him leaving in the first place was a dislike of Smurthwaite, my memory is hazy but I’m sure he’d spoken out about it.

Don't see it happening as Whitfield like Rawlinson is training well and has been used in the friendly matches and looks like staying having not gone on trial or trained with any other clubs or even been mentioned in any rumours....Askey seemed to  intimate that if they don't find other clubs and stay then as long as they train hard and focus both will be in contention for places and will be considered usefull squad members.

Lets face it Montano is sometimes not available and with Amoo and Worrall as first choice although Worrall is arguably more effective in a midfield three then having Brown and Whitfield as back isn't bad options to have squad wise.

Grant is an interesting one training with the youth team and told he will not play a single game this season for the first team and

on the last year on contract you would think either Grant should be available for a free transfer or a season long loan.

However unlikely a midfield three of Worrall/Grant/Oyeleke with a front three of Cullen/Pope/Amoo if all can stay fit would be

blooming brilliant and has play off potential frankly.
