On this day in 2007 Goalkeeper Ray Hancock sadly passes away.

Ray was a lovely guy. I knew him well because his wife Joan was my Head of Department for seven years when I started teaching. We kept in touch with them and visited regularly after she retired. Ray was a real comedian - wonderful company. We visited him a couple of weeks before he died - he looked very poorly. Eddie said to him, “will you be fit for Saturday, Ray?!” He responded “Just the bench this time”. A great guy.

I remember the day he died - it was our wedding anniversary and we were down in Kent because Vale were playing Gillingham the following day. Very sad news.

With Ray in Goal and Johnny Nicholson half back the Vale had a great defence.

I was sorry to see him get transferred, but he deserved his chance to play at a higher level.

Lovely memoir Jean.

Great keeper Ray, and along with Ray King remain the 2 most remembered keepers of my youth.

The photograph of Ray Hancock on the front of the then Saturday late edition Sentinel making a save vs Liverpool at Anfield during the 0-0 draw is etched in my mind. A great goalkeeper and I remember always thinking when a kid, "Thank heaven he's our goalie'. I have his autograph somewhere.

That was Ray’s brother Ken. Ken was transferred to Ipswich. Ray finished his League career at Vale and then moved to Northwich Vics
