On this day in 1954

...we remember:

 

1954 Port Vale play in an FA Cup semi-final game against West Brom at Villa Park in front of a crowd of 68,221. Albert Leake scores for Vale but the Baggies win 2-1 to reach the final.

I wish that I could remember that Barry.

It's one of my greatest regrets in life that I wasn't around to witness that, but not being born until 1956 explains it!

I also missed our free scoring 58-59 team.

 

I spoke a lot to Albert. A lovely fella and of course he could play in a few positions apart from his goal scoring exploits in that wonderful cup run.

 

If only we'd had VAR!!

I just missed out but my father was there. Bitter sweet moment for him as his favourite Vale player was Ronnie Allen !

 

Incidentally, if anyone thinks Vale’s pitch is bad now, just check out the footage when we knocked out holders Blackpool at Vale Park in an earlier round !

I was there, same moments as you father, also disappointed Allen didn't become player manager as at Palace, or as a manager. The pitch indeed was terrible, we were leading Palace 5-1 and the game abandoned at half time, replay against Stoke had to be played at the Vic. Tactics against Matthews was to force him off the wing into the mud towards the middle.
