Caught an interview on RS with a Lady from a Burslem regeneration scheme,she was discussing the effect of the Vale folding would have on Burslem and surrounding area and Smurthwaites name got brought up,she obviously not a fan and told a story of when She attended Joan Whalleys retirement do and a collection bucket was sent round to donate for the Christmas lights in Burslem when she arrived at our glorious leader he sniffeley said I'll put the lights on at Vale Park for an hour and put nowt in the bucket.

That's what gets me most about all of this. I really believed that Smurthwaite cared about Burslem, if only through wanting to leave some kind of legacy and get his ego massaged. I believed that he would want to ensure that the history books would remember him fondly and that he'd want to be seen to do right by the locals and staff at the club, so I overlooked much of what he did, or at least put it down to ineptitude rather than anything self-serving. I thought that under the bumbling vainglorious exterior, there might be a decent human being. What a fool I've been! As the priggish incompetence fell away, rather than expose some kind of heart, it just showed a nasty, supercilious, malicious, lying thicko. The guy is filth and whoever takes over from Jeff Kent and writes the next history of the Vale will surely have to state that he's our worst ever chairman. I hated Bell but, by Christ, he's ten times the person that Sex Man will ever be.
