Someone commented the other day that Gordon Banks changed our perception of goalkeepers. Growing up, everyone wanted to be a striker but once Gordon came on the scene a lot of youngsters wanted to play in goal and be Gordon Banks.

 

His funeral yesterday was a fitting tribute. I stood in the rain to watch him go past. Vale fan or not, he was the greatest goalkeeper you'll ever see and a great ambassador for the city, having lived here for the past 50 years.

There were 4 other 'keepers there as well.

All greats in their time.

Clemence, Shilton, Seaman and Jennings.

 

Nice to see them out in force.

I haven't seen much of Pat Jennings, one of the few 'keepers to have scored a goal.

 

4 years ago was on a family holiday in Guernsey. At our hotel one night there were loads of guys walking around in suits, turns out there was a Sportsmans evening taking place featuring Pat Jennings. Meet him at the bar real nice guy, looked in good health. Impression was a lot of the good words said about Banksy also applied to Jennings. Maybe its the era they came from.

I think that's right.

They were well paid at the time but had very little compared to today's overpaid footballers.

Coming from humble, working class backgrounds must have helped to keep their feet on the ground, when many of their family and friends were still doing low paid manual work.
