Nuneaton / Coventry

Last year all the talk was Smurf was buying Nuneaton ground so Coventry can move there. This week it turns out Coventry deal for the Ricoh runs out at the end of season, coinsidence?

Smurf has been quoted as to say hes had no contact from Coventry regarding moving them, but he did however suggest Cov could sell their training ground and build houses on it and then start training in Nuneaton - was this his plan all along?

Nuneaton's ground is far too small for Cov to play first team matches there.

According to their local press Smurthwaite has been touting Liberty Way to Coventry for a new training ground so they can sell their existing one for housing.

That would probably require Nuneaton going under and breaking their existing lease. Perhaps that was always his hope.

Anyone know if there is a similar rule on priority if a Football League side shares with a National League side? Similar to when we always used to have to shift days whenever Stoke were at home in the PL?

I might be barking up the wrong tree but given all that has come to light today, I am convinced this is his plan. If my only aim was to make money without any thought for 2 football clubs and their fans, history, tradition, you'd have to say he couldn't have played it any better.

There’s plenty of spare land around it to build a new stand at Nuneaton.

  • 2 weeks later...

The EFL have given Coventry City further time to finalise their plans to remain at the Ricoh Arena in 2019-20.

City's owners remain in a legal dispute with Premiership club Wasps, the Ricoh's owners and Coventry City Council.

Both have said that they will not enter negotiations while that is ongoing.

If it is not resolved by 2 April, EFL clubs will be notified about a meeting to decide Coventry's future.
