Just asking.

I've seen Vale pictures and videos, with Hamburg fans in it. With Hamburg/Vale flag. Singing Vale songs in German. Is this some sort of fan alliance?

I believe there is links with fans for both HSV and their rivals Saint Pauli (Sure Malcolm Hurst is linked with Saint Pauli)...

I Best keep quiet about following Werder Bremen I guess as my foreign team!

St Pauli appeal to the NLV as they share the same "champagne socialist" ethos. They play up to a left wing stance to aid their extremely capitalist business practices.

The true alliance between Vale fans from the Potteries is definitely with HSV. This was certainly helped when St Pauli and Stoke formed a strategic alliance a couple of seasons ago. My understanding is that the Chosen Few (One of HSVs firms) ran Stoke off the Reeperbaan when they played a friendly over there a few summers ago. This was partly done to solidify the friendship between Vale and HSV.

A couple of us went to watch Man city Vs HSV in a UEFA cup game because it was a fiver about 10 years ago. After that a few of us went to Hamburg to watch a game and we met a few of their fans and got talking to them. Since then we've become friends and we've been going to watch them and they've been coming to watch us. I made the stickers a couple of years ago and we got a couple of hundred made and one of the German lads has printed thousands of them off and stuck them everywhere. So no properly weird story or anything sorry!

What's wrong with champagne socialism?

Redistribution of wealth + nice alcoholic beverages = everyone's a winnner

They'll probably love what the Italian football authorities are trying to do - they want to outlaw "territorial racism" so that songs and chants about clubs and fans from different parts of the country would be treated every bit as seriously as the other -isms.

It's worrying to think what football atmospheres will be like in 10 years or less (although watching an Arsenal game at The Emirates gives you a pretty good idea).

There'll be no humour in any chants in case people are offended, there'll be lip-reading experts sat facing the crowd, it will be a largely non-contact sport and it will be stopped every 30 seconds for VAR.

Plenty of songs sung at Arsenal; a damn sight more than at Vale in recent years - it's to do with crowd size and relative success.

I do know what you mean though. There is an attempt to sanitise football in Europe so it looks and sounds like American sport - loads of money and zero passion. They just don't get it.

True many of NLV are Pauli fans and we travel there with Vale fans from up there too. We first went about 18 years ago and loved the ethos, music (punk, ska, northern soul) and the crap football. There's about twenty of us in all who go as and when. I also know many HSV fans over there and the third club in the region, Altona 93 where SP and HSV fans go. We also travel all over Europe to other clubs that aren't full of pie and mash; Frieburg, Rayo Valecano, Eibar, Red Star Paris, Union SG etc. Whoever you go and see German football is a better fan atmosphere at a fraction of the price. Just sad football geeks.

There's no animosity between the HSV/Vale and SP/Vale, just the usual jovial slagging off. More of a Lambrusco socialist anyway. We're off on Friday to see St Pauli away in Cologne then another third division game on the Saturday. It will be a good second half of the season with HSV, SP, Cologne and Union Berlin at the top fighting for the two automatic spots.

Bermondsey Tim is fuming you called him a socialist, he has a nude picture of Thatcher up in his flat!
