Extinction Rebellion versus brexit

Nice idea but I'm retired now and don't have access to the scientific literature and have other things to do. People will make up their own minds, particularly if they end up paying a carbon tax!!!

Please do not call me narrow minded because I am not.

Interesting that you are concerned that it might cost you in tax. But hey, what is the future of the planet compared to a few quid.

Any article you want from the Lit. let me know. I can download it for you and send you the pdf.

Apologies if I did, I thought I used the phrase "seemingly closed mind" to be "easy"

Toyah, If it was real I wouldn't mind paying the tax at all.

We may some interests in common work wise in that in the mid 80's I was trained to use a Molecular Modelling System called CHEMX. The idea was every Chemist would have modelling software on his computer and would only need to make one molecule to achieve the projects goal!! However it didn't work out like that, not even close.

The guy who wrote the bulk of the software and designed the system left Cambridge Uni and set up his own company and literally made himself a fortune, his name I think was Keith something or other and the company was based in the Milton Keynes area. I met him a few times.

In the end it was apparent that specialists were needed and that's the way the industry went. I subsequently became interested in QSAR and a software program developed by Corwin Hansch and Al Leo at Pomona College, CA, the company who commercialised it were Daylight Software Inc. It was about calculating Partition Coefficients and PKa values etc which could then be used to correlate chemical structure with biological activity. In his time Hansch was one of the top 5 most quoted authors on the planet, I wished to meet him but never did.

Anyway thanks for the offer but since I've been retired I have hardly opened a Chemistry book which has been a massive surprise to me as chemistry had been a big part of my life since age 12 along with sport and Northern Soul music. I'm much more likely to have my head in a golf book these days!!

So the UN say this situation requires drastic action ( https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/sg/statement/2018-10-08/statement-secretary-general-ipcc-special-report-global-warming-15-ºc ) what do thos who agree it’s serious thing needs to be done.

V62 My view as you may well anticipate is this statement by the Secretary General is not worth the paper it's written and the same applies to the IPPC special global report if this statement actually reflects it's content. The first sentence starts with "The inter-governmental panel on Climate Change", we can all guess it's comprised of administarors and/or politicians.....grreat.

The Secretary General for a start is an administrator most probably without a scientific brain cell in his body and so will just be taking his information from other politicians and the IPPC as though it was gospel.

The IPPC is populated by many bandwagon climate scientists who have propagated this theory of man made global warming for which there is no quality evidence whatsoever. The IPCC contains some well known climate scientist who have been shown to have manipulated data on which this theory is based. Many climate scientists will say man caused global warming is't even a theory anymore, it's an opinion at best or is junk science.

This statement says things like "We see the consequences all around us – more extreme weather, rising sea levels, diminishing Arctic sea ice". Take rising sea levels, the oceans are all linked so if there is say a 6" sea rise in the North East of American there should be a similar rise in Sydney Harbor and elsewhere around the world but there isn't.

On sea level rise, evidence is all around us the land/earth is constantly moving due to movement of tectonic plates/earthquakes and volcanoes which causes land mass to rise and fall, so this may be a reason for sea level variation. Good luck to the "Climate Science King Canuters" stopping the eruption of volcanoes!! Also no one knows what is happening at the un-mapped bottom of the deep ocean floors, this land mass may be rising and/or falling thus affecting sea level.

One piece of data often quoted by climate scientists in support of sea level rise is from New York City and Boston. Much of these two cities is built on land fill, reclaimed land from the sea. Very heavy skyscrapers have been built on the land fill, so one explanation for sea level rise in these locations is it's not the sea level rising it's the ground sinking.

There are four "Climate Change Battles" going on right now between Climate Scientists, Politicians, The Public and The Media. The science battle is being won by the Climate Change skeptics because the evidence just isn't there for man made global warming and the other three battles generally involve people who know no or have no interest in science and have already swallowed the Global warming theory and so it's going to be a long hard road to right this ship alter it's course.

I'm all for looking after the planet, stopping the destruction of the rain forests, sensible waste disposal and sensible use and disposal of plastics, preserving fossil fuels and searching for other more environmentally friendly methods of generating energy but this is a totally different ball game to following the dogma of man made global warming.

The earth may be in a slight warming phase but it's just come out of a mini ice-age and just like for millions of years beforehand and many times before, the Earth will eventually start to cool down a tad, it's simply part of the global eco-system that is in a constant state of equilibrium and part of natural climate change.

Hi Paul, thanks for the response, implicitly if you don’t believe in it the thing to do about it is nothing. I’m more interested in those who say it’s man made and very serious - what do they say is to be done about it? I’m particularly interested in the idea that environmentalists are inclined to go to the pessimistic end of projections. Prime face onemight expect that if you’re more pessimistic, you’d view it as more of a threat and therefore be more likely to be politically active. However, if the situation requires drastic action soon, on the scale of the societal changes that took place in a world war i.e. changes in months in industrial production, lifestyle, diet, travel... that might seem overwhelming. In that regard given the slow progress on carbon reduction, many would say we’re going backwards in fact those who shy away from talking about what’s to be done are more pessimistic than those taking action.

Just to push back on the idea that there is consensus on the theory of man/CO2 induced global warming.

Video of a Climate Scientist who gave a presentation to Donald Trump which led Trump to make the decisions he did on aspects of Climate Change.

Yes these are Youtube videos but they are from high level scientists giving lectures at prestigious conferences.

They make very interesting and educational viewing, a must watch to get more educated about the nonsense of what's going on in the world of Climat Change.

The fact that manager Paul6754 is holding sway on here like some kind of guru just makes me put my head in my hands and cry real tears. This debate has been hijacked by the terminally stupid. And that makes me very very sad.

Everything he says is just rubbish.

Toyah, Have you been drinking or smoking. You posted earlier I called you "narrow minded" which I had not done but now you're calling me "Terminally stupid". The only retort when you've lost the discussion is to name call and utter obnoxious statements, low level tactics from a supposed University Lecturer.

Tell or explain to me what I've posted that is rubbish. Post your reasoning and evidence for the "Theory" of man made Carbon Dioxide causing global warming so I can see where you're coming from.

You posted, "There is a 100% correlation between CO2 and Climate/Global Warming and that is fact" or something to this effect. Anyone can watch scientists with impeccable qualifications and pedigrees present at prestigious international conferences (eg Post #52) that this theory is wrong, very wrong, not my words!! I guess you prefer to believe Al Gore on the subject.

I have no wish or desire to hijack any debate but I particularly will correct a supposed scientist who chooses to perpetuate junk science. You truly surprise me.

On a much lighter note, I recently travelled to Edinburgh and stopped at one of these roadside snack wagons.

I was greeted by a not unattractive middle aged woman, who was dressed something akin to Paloma Faith. Including the high heels. The sight of someone “dolled up” to the nines serving greasy burgers and deep fried Mars Bars in a grubby part of town was quite surreal !

A conversation was struck up which inevitably turned to the weather.

“See this global warming by the way” she said, “they say it will be 90 degree’s all year round in Scotland. Sounds fecking brilliant to me” !

I found it difficult to argue her stance !

I think this is an interesting, more generically related article that might inform both the responses and lack thereof to this thread...https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/nov/23/study-shows-60-of-britons-believe-in-conspiracy-theories?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Thanks for that V62; what I find most chilling is the idea that there are more Brexiteers and climate change sceptics out there than I see on OVF, purely because they don't use social media.

OK, so somebody told Trump what he wanted to hear.

I think it's telling that the main proponents of this are quite far out on the political right, because ultimately Climate Change denial is, at its core, big business lobbying to make something inconvenient disappear.

How do you know that? From the video his daughter Ivanca is pro-climate change so presumably someone dear to his heart was telling him what he didn't want to hear!! It seems he made his decision based on evidence and facts.

I think it's telling that the main proponents of this are quite far out on the political right,

I don't think it's telling at all, the only "data" I've seen is that 12% (or was it 16%) of people who voted for Trump thought Climate Change was an issue or real (or something along those lines) whereas 66% of people who voted for Clinton thought it was. The main point is the general public perception that Global Warming and the soon to be global catastrophies are real and a given but it is just not true and certainly not agreed by all Scientsts/Climate Scientsts or members of the general public, it's not even close.

I'm not far right of even close but I'm further right of Jeremy Corbyn and I'm a Climate Change skeptic. I stand more scientifically informed than most people because of the occupation that chose me so am able to look at the data/information and make a more informed decision. I would change my mind if good data became available or the predictions made by the proponents of Climate Change were coming true. The sea levels are not rising, the artic ice may be melting in some places but in others ice mass is being formed, there are more polar bears than ever apparently etc etc.

Climate Change should have nothing to do with politics, whether it's happening or not should first be ironed out in the scientific arena not courts of law as one well known proponent of climate change is trying to do.

because ultimately Climate Change denial is, at its core, big business lobbying to make something inconvenient disappear.

Santa, Why would big business want to make something disappear that they're making tons of money out of and which is providing thousands of jobs.

IMHO it is the people on the left like the FGR chairman who push all this nonsense to further their Green agenda and their businesses profits, the green are very much part of the left the last time I looked.

I'm totally in favor of preserving the planet, the rain forests etc and totally in favor of letting third world countries burn fossil fuel to produce energy to enable them them to escape poverty, aren't you and the general public.
