Match Thread - FAC1 Port Vale v Sunderland

It is more about the predictability of the game, and the predictability of us weakening in the January transfer window. I am beginning to resent the 5 hours on a Saturday that travel to and from plus the game involves when we are quite often not very good.

I’m never quite sure why you don’t end it all, you sound like a manic depressive

Only the second time I’ve seen the Vale since the away fixture at Colchester and it was a big improvement. Not a good idea though to give away a goal in the first minute and follow it up with a second against a L1 side in its tenth unbeaten game. Where on earth was our midfield when the ball was rolled across the edge of our penalty area for a free shot on goal?

Fair play to the lads though for a fighting comeback as Aspo brought on the player with the greatest potential in our squad (after just a few short months) and a great future at the Vale, if he is allowed to stay, that is. A real game changer if ever I saw one. The same can be said too about the imperious Pope who looked a class above. What would we do without him?

Just two reservations from me though, the second more serious than the first. To start with, I still have some serious worries about Aspo’s management, the principal of which is reflected in our inability to turn defence into attack, other than by lumping it forward. Manny aside, we lack the players or tactics to do this and it isn’t helped by Aspo’s insistence on playing a centre-half as a right fullback. Good defender as he is, Rawlinson has little or no mobility and no crossing ability, so our potential to attack down the right flank is severely limited. This will hold us back all season unless Aspo changes it. He needs to sort out his central pairing and play proper fullbacks, which in today’s football is a specialist position. I’m not holding my breath.

Second, and more seriously, the upcoming transfer window has me a tad anxious as our ever parsimonious owner looks either to save or make money. The opportunity to cash in on a few assets may be too much for him and, after Sunday, we can’t rule out a few approaches. We desperately need a winger to consistently feed the Pope but the chances, imho, are vanishingly small. As we’ve all been saying (or at least most), there’ll be no real progress until he’s gone.

If our better players are shipped out in January there will be rioting in the streets of Burslem. It would be Bill Bratt x 10 and I, for one, wouldn't be in the Blue One's shoes if it came to pass.

Despite a draw and a defeat in our last two games, I'm actually more positive than when we were nicking draws and wins underservedly.

We're playing fairly attacking football (20 minute fiasco against Mackems aside). If we wrap Manny up in cotton wool then results should improve to match the greater entertainment we're seeing. I'd like to see us abandon the 5 at the back, as its served its purpose, and move to a 4231 or 442 in this run up of fixtures to Christmas, of which you'd back us to pick a fair few wins up.

So the proceeds from the Sunderland game would cover half a month's wages eh Norman?

So the £75,000 TV fee + an estimated £75,000 gate receipts = £150,000 for half a month so £300,000 for the month!

£3.6m a year! We should walk this league then!

What an absolute lying buffoon.

Gate money won’t be anywhere near that, bear in mind concessions included and the fact Sunderland get 45% of the gate probably less than 50k, TV was 64k I think still doesn’t add up mind!

TV was £75k. If he was only counting that it might be slightly nearer to the truth.

Manny is an exciting talent.I would love to see us give him a five year deal.Unfortuneatly I think there will quite a few Championship clubs prepared to do the same at ten times what we can pay him.

You forget that Norman is a clever businessman and will be rubbing his hands that he will get a late Christmas bonus by selling him in January.

He has a cunning plan like previous January windows to sell the Crown Jewels and fill his back pocket and then say he is subsidising the club.

The Hugill money will go into a black hole and smoke and mirrors will make it disappear.

Really he can’t see in front of his face that he could make more money if he gave him a decent contract he could make more money.

He just dropped lucky with the Hugill money because if he had still been at the club he would have sold him for a pittance for short term gain.

Anyone with a brain can read Scumthwaite's reason for saying the money from the Sunderland game will help to pay half of November's wages. He will come out in January and say that he has had to put money in the club to pay December's wages and debts and then will state that the Hugill money will only pay him back the money he will be owed and then pay January, February and March's wages.

Surely the budget for the season will have been set without assuming in excess of £100k from a first round FA Cup win. So this income should be a bonus, not something that is already spoken for. If not, how has the EFL approved our submitted budget?

There's a difference between a budget for a financial period and cashflow. The chairman was, somewhat clumsily and unadvisedly, referring to cashflow, in my view. You can be on budget and have no cash in your account.
