Port Vale manager Neil Aspin said that his side “got the luck” as they battled to a 1-0 away win over Oldham Athletic. The Valiants won 1-0 through a Tom Pope penalty but the home side had a penalty claim turned down and also hit the woodwork as Vale rode their luck at times. Aspin […]

There is always an element of luck in a game, sometimes it works in your favour, sometimes not. Usually it balances out, or one team is superior in any case, but 1-0 wins usually could have gone either way. A stout defensive display, the absence of their leading goal scorer may have helped, but we have injuries too. Take the points where you can, we did not over run them so there must have been an element of luck, as the man said.

Despite what some thought, there was no luck about the penalty. It was just sheer stupidity by Clarke. The one they might have had shortly after was more iffy. It was clearly shoulder to shoulder and the ball was in the vicinity - unlike the Clarke challenge. The real luck we had was when they hit the bar and it bounced down to Brown but they were also lucky not to have their No 4 sent off for kicking Whitfield when he was on the floor. I doubt the ref or liner could see it though.

A hard fought win with some outstanding performances by a defence that was castigated by everyone last Saturday. Well done lads.

Exactly. Aspin didn’t need to talk about luck.

Over the course of a season luck usually evens itself out. I think that's what Neil Aspin was getting at. We have lost games where we had bad luck and we have hit the woodwork a few times already this season. Today was our turn and our honest manager called it as he saw it.

Why not?

Because I’m now left thinking that the real reason for us getting the three points was more down to chance and the failings the opposition and/or the referee rather than any tactical improvement from the management or better performance and concentration from the players.

So when we lost to Carlisle because of some poor refereeing, did you object to Aspin saying we had bad luck and did you think we should have taken the three points?

Aspin is honest in interviews. There is no BS with him. Polar opposite to NS!

I'd say we've had more bad luck than good luck so far this season so I'm looking forwards to seeing it balance itself out over the coming months.

The challenge now is to follow up an away victory with a home win next Saturday. Anything from Stevenage on Tuesday will be a bonus.
