Amazing remarks from Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness after Ozil quit international football because he claimed he was the victim of racism.

Ozil has a languid style and isn't a tigrish tackler but he's a brilliant footballer in the right system and has won the World Cup and nigh on 100 caps for Germany. If he feels like he does then fair play to him for coming out and saying so. He wasn't the only player to under-perform.

Ozil has accused German FA president Reinhard Grindelwald of leading the bigotry against him after he joined Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan for a meeting with Turkish president Recep Erdogan back in March.

Ozil is a high profile sportsman. He has used this status to gain access to Erdogan or allowed himself to be drawn in to meeting Erdogan. I have Erdogan down as a controversial politician on the world stage with some indications he is a despot. So surely Ozil should understand he is open to challenge about his motives and why he appears to put Turkey ahead of Germany his current homeland. But it's a free world and he doesn't deserve racist abuse, nor does anyone.

I work with a few German football fans and they said it was his and Gundogan's use of the phrase "My president" which was used to caption the photo which pissed off most "Average" people in Germany. It was like a rejection to them especially in the current political climate.
