PEDANT WARNING!!!

Whilst indeed both the eagle landed and Armstrong set foot on the moon’s surface on 20th USA Eastern time, it was not until the early hours of the 21st GMT that this bleary eyed 10 year old watched those grainy images of man’s first lunar steps.

I was totally fascinated with the 60’s “Space Race” and for me it was a sad day when the 12th and final American left the moon in 1972.

As interesting as SkyLab and other projects to come were, NOTHING could compare to seeing a human walking on quite literally foreign “soil”

What is surprising looking back at that monumentus achievement, is that they were on the moon less than 24 hours !

That’s a long way to go for a day trip !

The year got even better of course as I witnessed Vale’s long unbeaten run from the start of the season and ultimately saw my first Vale promotion.

Space travel & Vale. You can’t beat it !

I remember it as though it was yesterday. However, because Perth, Western Australia is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) +12:00 hours it was 10:56 a.m. Monday July 21, 1969 when we witnessed the historic event. One of our store managers arranged for a television to be installed in anticipation that the moon landing would take place during work hours. We were not disappointed.

It was the summer between school and university for me. I had a summer job at a toffee factory in North Shields. I was so tired at the end of each day after lumping heavy boxes all over the place that my determination to stay awake for the landing didn't last long and I slept through the whole thing!

It's always fascinated me how some people have convinced themselves the moon landings were faked and insist it's all some sort of conspiracy. Why can't they fathom out the evidence for it being real is utterly overwhelming and also deduce that maintaining such a conspiracy to such a phenomenally high degree for almost 50 years is unbelievably unlikely?

Still, there's nowt as funny as folk!

Thank goodness for replays Jean

On the conspiracy theory, apparently someone once asked Buzz Aldrin face to face had he really been to the moon ? Aldrin quite calmly punched him in the face and put him on the floor !

One of the reasons Armstrong was chosen was his coolness under pressure.

The actual landing itself had to be performed by Armstrong himself. As the lunar surface approached, he was finding difficulty trying to find a suitable landing site. Fuel was running out and he brought Eagle down safely with literally seconds to spare.

His heart rate during this process was recorded in the low 70’s ! Now that’s calm !

Agreed especially as it happened at the height of the Cold War. If it had been faked the Russians would have been screaming Fake News from the rooftops. Oh sorry I forgot its only the current American President who shouts that.

Seem to remember Patrick Moore hosting the show ?

Whilst on the Apollo topic, I can’t help but think was Jack Swigert the luckiest or unluckiest astronaut in history. Possibly both !

Ken Mattingly was due to be part of the ill fated Apollo 13 crew, but was replaced by Swigert at the last minute due to possible health issues with Mattingly.

On one hand, Swigert gets an amazingly unexpected chance to go to the moon, on the other it almost cost him his life !

Swigert was also the one who stirred the air tanks which caused the explosion ! How to win friends and influence people eh !

How NASA got those three men back is beyond belief. I used to rush home from school to find out the latest updates. It engrossed by life. Homework was definitely on the back burner for those few days.

Gosh, as a young science mad lad, those were exciting days !
