New Squad Numbers

The numbers aren't picked by the players either, its the management that pick them. When you look at that 1-11 its very old school and traditional in terms of the numbers given relating to their positions.

When squad numbering came in some clubs tried numbering in alphabetical order. This proved confusing, not only on the field but also as players left and joined the squad, so most (if not all) still use 1-11 for their first choice players.

Filled in a few blanks from last night.

There's a few interesting numbers of note - number 10 I assume will be Miller for a start. It's interesting that Pugh changed [down] number, so I guess that'll mean he's further down the pecking order. Also, why change Smith if not to something more predominantly common for a centre half?

I suppose numbers are numbers though and don't particularly mean much.

I'd be very surprised if Kay starts ahead of Smith even when not suspended. Otherwise 1 to 11 is probably what Aspin sees as his first 11. Rawlinson maybe pushing up higher in the mix and Quigley in with a big shout if Miller hasn't played a couple of games.

Agree with all of that. I assume Kay is no longer seen as a centre half - only in case of emergencies.

How come the numbers haven't been published officially anywhere?

As far as I can tell the following players have not yet received numbers: Dior Angus, Tyrone Barnett, Harry Benns, Mike Calveley, Tom Conlon, Joe Davis, Rob Lainton and Dan Turner. Guess we'll have to wait until reading the matchday programme to see who of those get a number.

I remember Charlton had an outfield player called Balmer wearing the number 1 jersey in the 90s. That numbering system didn't last long. Didn't Holland's goalkeeper wear the number 8 shirt in the 78 World Cup as well?

The other one I remember was Scotland giving out squad numbers in 1992 based on the number of caps each player had. I think 5 and 6 played up front.
