That's a truly shocking batting effort against a decent but not great NZ team. Credit to their two good fast bowlers but something is badly wrong if the cream of English batsmen can't muster much more than that. Dear oh dear. I'll look for my pads in the loft.

Embarrassing, the only word to sum it up. Village green cricketers could do better than that, it really makes you question the players' desire, have they just gone there for a jolly?

I was always of the opinion that press over exaggerated things during and after the Ashes and that England were not as bad as was suggested.

 

However, this is really worrying as you've got a side with three players reaching the ends of their careers, you've got a batting line-up with (Root aside) no-one in the top ten batsmen in the world. You've got a spinner who for all his contributions with the bat can't take wickets and can't keep the scoring rate down.

 

For me, I would like to see Jack Leach brought in as a spinner (forget the fact he can't bat like Mooen, his first priority is wickets) and I would personally stop the experiment with the likes of Craig Overton and Tom Curran. They are medium-fast English conditions bowlers. For me, you need to bring in pace such as Mark Wood, Jamie Overton (far more express than his brother) or a left-hander like George Garton.

 

As far as the batting goes... well, where to start? We potentially need a new opening pair, still need a number three and need a steady accumulator to eventually replace Cook.

 

Certainly for the next Test I would hope they consider bringing in Leach, Livingstone and potentially a couple from the Lions squad.

Disgusting. I fail to see how some of these lads get selected. New Zealand bowled well but we should be doing much better. I know it's completely different but we've just outplayed them in the one day series.
