Lee Hughes bankrupt.

Has a well-documented past which can't be excused, but whilst with Vale his attitude was exemplary and I'm still convinced we wouldn't have limped through to promotion without his goals and leadership.

York away (first win after a bad run, a captain's performance) and Burton at home sealed promotion for us, and he was instrumental in both.

Hope he sorts himself out.

Just because he played for us for a short while, doesn’t make him a decent person. I wish him no harm, but I certainly have no sympathy for him either. At the end of the day, he has cost someone their life theough dangerous driving and even went on the run for a few days afterwards before handing himself in. Whilst earning a kings ransom he still manages to somehow blow it all. If he hadn’t have played for us, this thread would have been slating him up to the hilt. Judge a person on his or her lifestyle and not just who they played for.

I once read somewhere that something like 75% of professional footballers are declared bankrupt within 3 years of retiring. I don't know if that includes lower division and thus lower paid players.

You have to wonder what the PFA, FA & EFL do to help players with money management.

Gordon Taylor the highest paid Trade union leader knows how to manage his money.

Why should any of these organisations help players for God’s sake ? I realise that players are not the sort who are likely to come up with the Theory Of Relativity, but surely even they know that if they spend more than they earn, there is eventually only one outcome. I don’t give two hoots what happens to them. Unless of course we can all call upon such organisations for fiscal help, which seems most unlikely.

Not everyone is privy to one of Bell’s bulging biscuit tins.

I would never judge anyone on their “lifestyle”.

We all have our issues and who knows what triggers certain things.

Lee Hughes being “bankrupt” is hardly news. He probably still has more money than you and me.

I’ll judge people on how I see them in person. Lee Hughes was full of remorse for what he did and came across as a good man on the occasion I met him.

Don't think I or anyone else on here suggested he was a 'decent' person, just that at the Vale he was an excellent player with a good attitude, and was very friendly on the couple of occasions I spoke to him.

Not wanting to start a argument, but whilst with us on and off the field he was a great credit to the club, If he's still got his boots bring them along, at least he'd know where the net was...

He was very generous with his money when he was at vale, so maybe not a surprise, but could be irrelevant and just be bad business choices. But he apparently turned up for drinks one night, put a grand behind the bar for everyone and then left half an hour later.
