Brexit again...

I don't really think effective advertising and campaigning is undermining democracy.

So do you think that the poster about Turkey which I showed you was "effective advertising and campaigning" even though it was a downright lie and might well have been financed illegally??

I also find it rich that you are trying to play the democracy card yet you don't give a shot about the result of the credit vote and would happily overturn it tomorrow.

What is the credit vote??

There is only one of us that is a staunch defender of democracy, and it isn't you.

I would resent that comment if it came from anyone whose opinion I respected.

I'm glad we agree that Carol was lying in your video then as I was quoting her saying that there was no discussion of them joining.

She used the word "discussion". I was referring to inaccurate lying statements that were made, not discussion.

To go back to my original post, I prefaced the link with "Whichever side of the divide you are on, surely we must all find this scary."

It was not an attempt to argue the Brexit issue for the millionth time, it was to raise awareness of the way in which big technology companies are interfering in the democratic process. I'm sorry this point was lost in the subsequent squabbling. If elections of any sort anywhere are undermined by the sort of behaviour which is outlined in the talk then we are on a slippery slope.

Sorry mate but that's not true. There WAS talk about Turkey joining the EU - I heard it myself in Hanley the day before the referendum. There were also posters claiming it was happening.

The point about the link I posted though was less to do with Brexit and more to do with how the tech companies are creating situations which undermine democracy. I thought you would be appalled at the thought of folk undermining democracy but I seem to have been wrong.

Why would you be surprised about people talking about Turkey joining the EU just before the referendum?

The BBC website on 17th March,2016 said "Nigel Farage is right to say Turkey is lined up to join the EU one day".

Why wouldn't people not believe the BBC?

I think social media is, in some respects, spiralling out of control, and misinformation and lies can now be spread far too easily and quickly to millions of people in a nano second.

Students of history will know all about the power of propaganda and Goebbel's words that if you keep on telling a persistent lie time and again it will sink in and people believe it.

Of course, in the Brexit debate we all take sides and tend to support what we want to see and hear and reject the opposite but I haven't seen anything on the same scale about the Remain campaign breaking the electoral rules time after time, nor being bankrolled by dodgy billionaires illegally, nor the blatant lies that were rammed down the throats of voters on matters like the £350 million for the NHS, 70 million Turks on their way here and the claim that the UK's political system is far more democratic than the EU.

I'd guess that we are heading for a fall as a society if we allow ourselves to be manipulated by extreme right wing propagandists copying Trump and what's gone on in America and playing on people's worries and emotions.

Of course we've seen in the past communist states doing the same thing - from Stalin to Mao, but this is 2019 and we are talking Brexit and the UK now.

It really is very frightening - whatever side of the Brexit divide you are on.

It's nearly as scary as politicians lying through their teeth to overturn the largest mandate for anything in British political history?

Turkey has been trying to join the EU since the 1990s but in recent years has got further away than ever to joining. Issues like Cyprus, human rights and civil war have stopped that.

It's tripe anyway because the UK has a veto if it wishes to use it, just as De Gaulle prevented us from joining in 63 & 67.

Or lying through their teeth to get the mandate in the first place. For god’s sake forget Brexit for a minute and look at what is being said about the tech companies and democracy. I should have put this one a new thread but some folk on here would still have totally ignored the point.
