Brexit again...

It’s always between the 2 main parties in the U.K. though with what ends up in a majority or one of them forming a coalition with a really small party. In France you can’t always predict the 2 parties meaning the 2 main parties can change through the years which will not happen in the U.K., we are stuck with a choice of Conservative or Labour.

Because it is a 2 party voting system, it is easy to image the extreme wings of the Conservative and Labour parties splitting off and so creating 4 parties or even a 5th with part of the  Lib Dems.

I doubt either Conservatives or Labour will legislate for change because it's suited them well over the years. But things are slowly evolving and I get the impression that more voters nowadays would like a wider choice and would be happy to see some of the smaller parties represented, like the Greens, or it could be the Brexit Party.

You could argue with some validity that Johnson's party is hard right and contains a lot of old UKIP members now. It has left behind the centre right represented by the likes of Grieve and Stuart which to all intents and purposes is a different grouping. Labour has gone very left and left its centre-left MPs struggling for a home. The Liberals have always blown with the wind but generally favoured the centre line. If you add in the Brexit party, UKIP, Greens and nationalist parties you get a fair spectrum of views that as Fosse says can perhaps be divided into 4-5 clear camps.

I like the STV because it means you can vote for a number of candidates/parties. You might think x is a good local MP if not your colour but because you think he's done a good job you can vote for him, along with your favoured party. And if you think the Greens deserve representation or the Brexit Party you can add them to your list. But it would end the two party system and make people work together. And we are not used to that and it's something that the two big parties would not want to do, so it might be a long way off.

I still suggest to everyone on here that if you look at past history what most voters want is a decent middle of the road type party that isn't to one extreme or the other. A party that is economically robust, but one that is concerned for the less fortunate members of society and does not leave them behind. Sadly politics is polarised at the moment with no sign of any middle way ahead.

But we have a coalition government now and it doesn’t seem to work well. I like the French system when you have 2 rounds, the first you vote for whoever you want then the leading 2 parties go through to the final vote, this way the smaller parties get more votes than they would with just one vote, also you definitely get a majority.

We do not have a coalition government

At the beginning of the 20th Century there were two main parties - Conservative and Liberal. From the 1920s onwards the Liberals were gradually supplanted by Labour, the latter forming short lived governments in the 20s and 30s before winning by a landslide in 1945; the rest as they say is history.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that something similar could happen to either the Conservatives or Labour, but which one? Whatever happens, with the electoral system we have only two parties will have a chance of forming a government, any others being kingmakers.
