Judging by the election results it seems that the majority of the electorate dont agree?

The majority of the electorate don't want them.  It's our crazy electoral system that allows governments to be elected by a minority not a majority.  We haven't had a government elected by a majority of the electorate since 1950.

I’ll ask you again. How would you work the election? Last time we had a majority was the referendum but half the country and more than half the politicians don’t accept the result.

Proportional representation.  It usual leads to coalition governments which are an effective means of avoiding the confrontational crap we get in the Commons with our system.

But we have a coalition government now and it doesn’t seem to work well. I like the French system when you have 2 rounds, the first you vote for whoever you want then the leading 2 parties go through to the final vote, this way the smaller parties get more votes than they would with just one vote, also you definitely get a majority.

It also enables smaller parties to be represented, both current main parties cover a wide range of policies and would likely reform into 3 or 4 parties giving a better match to peoples ideas.

The advantage of coalition governments is that different aspects can be chosen, whereas unlike  majority governments the best can be chosen not always dependent upon dogma.

We have a hung parliament with no majority, coalition governments  are usually  formed from 2 or 3 parties with ministerial posts spread across the parties

What we have now is not a coalition government.  It was a minority government with a confidence and supply agreement with the most unpleasant of the minority parties.  The DUP had no role in government.

Germany has had coalition governments for years and they seem to work fine.

The French system favours the main parties and doesn't work well. I think it's the same system as they have in Russia isn't it?!

You end up in Round Two with one big name versus the other big name so the other candidates are all eliminated. In the UK it would simply mean Tory v Labour all the time. It still results in one party taking all and in Round Two you don't give voters much choice, only A or B.

The best system of PR, for me, by a country mile is the STV. You can vote for several parties, completely different people or a combination of the two. It results in a fairer result that more properly reflects what people want and voted for.

As Jacko says, PR has worked in Germany very well over many years.

A system created in Germany by the UK after the war to prevent one party states.

It’s always between the 2 main parties in the U.K. though with what ends up in a majority or one of them forming a coalition with a really small party. In France you can’t always predict the 2 parties meaning the 2 main parties can change through the years which will not happen in the U.K., we are stuck with a choice of Conservative or Labour.
