I see Emily Thornbury has compared the Lib Dems to the Taliban following their latest policy announcement.  I chuckled at Tim Farron's response!

Re Diane Abbott.  I've just finished reading Rachel Reeves book "Women in Westminster" which is a history of the rise of women in our Parliament starting with Nancy Astor.  There is a section about the abuse which women MPs receive via social media.  In 2017 Amnesty International did some research into the number of abusive tweets that had been sent to female MPs in a 6 month period.  There were 25,000 of them and half of them had been sent to Diane Abbott.  Whatever you think of her politics, that is quite scandalous.

I agree with you 100%

However.....

If she knew what she was talking about and didn't talk such rubbish and sound so completely out of her depth she would not get any more abuse than any other member of parliament.

Her decision to send her child to a private school invited abuse.

Her comment West Indian mums will go to the wall for their children has invited abuse.

Her career is strewn with gaffes that invite abuse I could go on and on.

I agree with you, the abuse is wrong, but she does invite it on to herself.

It is a simple change, just make closing parliament a decision by parliament, doesn't stop the government doing it for a justifiable reason, but prevents misuse by dictators who could close parliament for months.

Apparently parliament could have introduced a one line bill at any time over the last 100 years or so to bring that into effect...... given it's use on occassions (majors cash for questions?) it makes you wonder why they didnt... perhaps it would restrict their use of it at a future date?..... when it was to their benefit.

A queens speech is a justifiable reason..... starting a new session is a justifiable reason.... I'm not suggesting they were the only reasons.

Perhaps the opposition parties have ulterior motives for wanting the prorogation stopped..... stopping the government stating it's intentions for the country just before a general election they are not prepared for.... it wouldn't look good if they simply voted down good proposals in the queens speech.... perhaps their motives should be questioned in a seperate action in the courts?

On this day in 1735 No. 10 Downing Street became the official residence for the British Prime Minister.

Since the Brexit Referendum No. 10 seems to resemble a motorway Services  for passing politicians 😮

Was that before or after the first brexit discussions mate

Agreed, all abuse is abhorrent and I dont doubt that her gender and race sadly play a part in the higher levels of abuse she gets.

But another factor will be the amount of utter rubbish and laughable gaffes that come out of her mouth.

I don't agree.  There are a considerable number of male MPs who talk utter rubbish and don't know what they're talking about.  Andrew Bridgen for example, was on Radio 5 telling the world that as an Englishman he was entitled to an Irish passport.  Dominic Raab was confused about the role of Dover in our trade with Europe.  Just a couple of examples off the top of my head.

Abbott gets the level of abuse because she is black and female.  Any who think those two aspects are not a the main reason for it is deluded I think.  Even excluding Abbott, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic female MPs received 35% more threats than their white counterparts.  These frequently include threats of rape, death and appalling racist language.

Abbott receives so many abusive messages now that they are not sent to the police straightaway but bundled together and sent en masse at the end of each week.

I don't like the woman but this sort of treatment of a democratically elected MP from racist bigots reflects very badly on certain sections of our society.

I mean yeh, I know what you mean.  Borris, Mike and Nige spent weeks standing in front of a big red bus daubed in rubbish and a laughable "gaff" so they have brought all the abuse on themselves...  oh wait?  How many threats of rape, how many death threats and how many racial slurs have they endured over twitter?

It's a good insight into some bodies psych when you see them part justifying racial and  sexist abuse.

Apologist for racist bigots.

You dont understand basic English.

Please stop your campaign of utter lies about me.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

Many many white Male MPs have said and done far worse without much backlash at all.  However, Abbott is a black female, I suspect that is what "invites" the abuse.

sorry about that I put the cart before the horse...

Thatcher said ridiculous things.

Corbyn says ridiculous things.

Boris says ridiculous things on a daily basis.

Khan says ridiculous things.

Thornberry says ridiculous things.

Lammy says ridiculous things.

They have all received abuse.

If ANY politician regardless of colour, creed, LGBT, transgender, vegetarian or gay says anything ridiculous then they will invite abuse,it's their brain and ability under discussion not their ethnicity.

And before you try and twist it NO I dont agree with it in any shape or form.

But if you look at the degree and nature of the of abuse Abbott receives compared to other female MPs, some of whom regularly talk out of their bottoms, you have to think there is more to it than just the fact that she says daft things.  The abuse in many cases is nothing to do with Abbot's brain or ability but purely to do with her sex and colour.
