Brexit again...

There was a very interesting opinion piece in the Times yesterday by Clare Foges. It was headed "Big lie of the ‘anti establishment’ Brexit vote" and argued that the suggestion that much of the Leave voted was targetted at the "elites" and "establishment" who were seen to be out of touch with the common man.

She goes on to argue that those regions and groups who voted most heavily for Brexit will be those who will suffer most from its consequences. She uses the Nissan plant in Sunderland as an example of this.

The most telling part of the article for me though was as follows:

"The moneyed establishment — the rich and super-rich — may be touched by Brexit, but wealth will insulate them against real pain. As the billionaire Peter Hargreaves, who reportedly gave millions to the Leave campaign, puts it: “You say my wealth is $4.6 billion? If it wiped $4 billion off and left me $600 million it would not change my lifestyle one iota.” Indeed, according to a survey last year by UBS, most UK millionaires believe Brexit will make them even richer. If not they can always escape, like the Brexiteer and Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently left the promised land of Brexit for the sunnier climes of Monaco."

Very sad.

For deprived areas like Stoke-on-Trent,I don't think economics came into the equation when voting for Brexit.Things can't get much worse for many of the 69% who voted to leave and whereas the rich may believe they will become richer, the Stokies probably believed they couldn't get much poorer?

You may well be right when it comes to why people around here decided to vote leave but I think they'll find they will actually be worse off. I hope not but I think our economy will suffer badly and the least well off will suffer the most from that as they always do.

I've made similar comments about Boris and Farage, both well off individuals who will hardly be affected. It also wouldn't surprise me that the aftermath of Brexit will be similar to a recession. Most ordinary people won't be affected that much, their investments may take a hit, their pounds won't buy as much foreign currency and fuel and food will go up a little etc, more of an irritation than a big problem.

However for the those people who lose their jobs it will be a big issue as getting another similar paying job will be a problem and hence some families and livelihoods will suffer immensely. Not pretty reading even for the City of London.

Likening it to a recession is common sense to me, but it will be a lot worse than anything seen for decades, in my view. I think it will be akin to the Great Depression of the 1920's.
