The Stoke City Topic Thread: Relegation? Staying up? Manager? Empty seats

Hughes came out with a classic after yesterday's defeat saying he 'doesn't do relegation'. In other words he's always been sacked by the clubs he's doomed to relegation before they technically got relegated, such as Fulham & QPR. If Sjoke don't replace him before the January spending window can be utilised they will go down, it's not rocket science, his track record says it all. Tactically, he's the Michael Brown of the Premier League.

Does anyone remember Brian Horton telling everyone he'd never been relegated when he came back to manage us? I'm sure he mentioned it at least once or twice.

He was in the end though - his infamous line - Derek I'm Gutted

Horton was the master of re-writing history. A particularly poor midweek away match, would become a good performance a few weeks later when he thought the few valeites who attended would have forgotten how poor it actually was. Unfortunately for him there are a few “elephants” like myself who didn’t forget. Another one of his favourites when accused of being defensive was to state that he “had four forwards on the pitch”. It may have been true that they were in the team, but they certainly weren’t in forward positions ! As proof I give you Steve McPhee being asked to play right midfield. A fantastic player for us, but a disaster area as our manager. Please, don’t start me on Horton !

Was that the 4-0 defeat away at Cambridge during the petrol crisis?

Heard that Hughes is well liked by everyone inside Stoke. However its what Mr Coates thinks that really matters. Hughes has made several expensive signings(In Stoke terms)who are not featuring regularly in the starting line up. More damaging to him is that the punters are getting fed up . It was the potential of season ticket holders not signing up for the next season that did for Pullis.

That's a good question - is Hughes responsible for this or does the buck stop with Mark Cartwright?

First team managers don't have the same input into signing players like they used to.

You are correct to point to his “successes” at Blackburn, but little happened under his watch at Fulham & QPR. Even with the middle eastern money at Man City he did nothing, although he was treated shabbily there. But any success he may have had in his career is now some 10 years since. Not the worst manager, but certainly not the best.

What’s he won?

Lived on his playing reputation.

I see Lanzini has been charged with diving. This has only happened because he is playing in the Premier League with 57 camera angles at each game.

this is true , the player quite rightly gets hauled over the coals the ref who in effect has had a big impact on the result as others will get away with it.

Interestingly I was amazed man city v spurs how many bad challenges much worse than montanos going lightly or un- punished.. inconsistency from the refs & bad decisions will always put them in the spotlight

Correct. Montano was never a red and that decision has potentially cost us a fortune. No consistency whatsoever.

Kane and Ali should both have been red carded, their challenges were much worse and had far more intent than Gibbo's.
