Tommy Mac

The citation leads to the club's website although the page specified no longer exists.

I think it may have been quoted from one of Jeff Kent's books.

It was phrased quite obliquely and I remember reaching a similar conclusion the first time I read it.

I am sure he got a veteran Peterborough play sent off for the first time in his career. Can someone confirm that.

After 54 years of watching the Vale still my favourite player.

Would Tommy Robson be the player you’re thinking of ? He played for Posh for donkeys years when Tommy was playing for Vale. Don’t know about the sending off though.

Heart of a lion Tommy had, kick him and he would just get up and kick them back. An absolute tragedy when he died. I'm sure that leaving his beloved Port Vale broke the lad's heart.

A couple of funny tails about Tom. On one occasion I remembered seeing Tom coming out of 'The Place' towards me and a girl that I was going out with at the time and I proudly said ''There's Tom McLaren he plays for the Vale'' and as he got closer it was clear that he was drunk and he did the maziest dribble I have ever seen him do as his legs were like rubber.

In the Vale Social club he was always stationed at the end of the bar by the public telephone and Tom treated it like it was his own and wouldn't let anyone else answer it in case it was a young lady wishing to contact him.

I loved Tommy Mac he not only wore the shirt but he had Port Vale in his heart and this can make up for many short comings.

Whenever I hear the song Jimmy Mac I always think of our Tommy and sing our version that was sung out loud with pride on the Bycars. Bloody hell football isn't the same these days.

Too true ! Although footballers were probably still paid more than the average fan, they were not paid that much more to make them feel aloof. This was even true of players in the old 1st Division. Stan Matthews apart that is who, by many reports, was a complete a*s*h*l*

and in the other hand somebody's testicles... flashes of aggression mixed with flashes of brilliance... he made games worth watching.

I feel very privileged to have shared such intimate times with the legend that is Tommy Mac.

I think it was Jim Iley Posh player Manager in the first game of the 69/70 promtion

It was Jim Iley I found this -

But Iley struggled to improve an ailing side, although he did create club history by becoming the first Posh player to be dismissed in a Division Four match at Port Vale. Iley allegedly kicked an opponent in an off-the-ball incident. He'd only been booked once in the previous 15 years as a professional footballer.

He was a legend he had no affiliation to our club but gave everything for it possibly sadly his life. RIP Tommy you gave me memories I’ll never forget
