Griff!!!!

Every good wish to a great guy who made the best of his abilities and performed a role that helped the team considerably whenever he was selected.

All teams need a 'Griff' or two, more so in L2 than L1, but at every level really - and no player at this level has the entire skill set. Griff used what he knew he was good at.

Hope your new club suits you, and you have a rewarding and enjoyable time there, as you no doubt did at Vale.

Griff played just under 200 games for Port Vale and under Adams who was an experienced successful manager. Used within his box at League 2 level he was effective. His box was mark, tackle, give short, protect in front of central defence. Doing that, and only that, he was a big asset. I thought he was a good bloke and a loyal servant to the club.

Micky Adams declared that: "he's a great character, a good bloke, and you can rely on him. If my daughter came home with him, I'd be delighted".

Player of the year, 2010.

Wish him well.

The quote was from Wiki, so I am trusting in them / it.

Both actually according to Wiki!

On Johnson:

In October 2012, Port Vale manager Micky Adams said that "I wouldn't say he's a laid-back character, but he can look horizontal at times. But he's a nice lad and if my daughter brought him home I'd be delighted."

On Griff:

In addition to his on-the-pitch skills, he was also considered to be a good character off of it. Micky Adams declared that: "he's a great character, a good bloke, and you can rely on him. If my daughter came home with him, I'd be delighted."

Both Sentinel links no longer work, so I'm not sure if there is a mix up somewhere, or if Adams actually said it twice. They're worded differently though, so maybe both genuine!

I'm sure he said that about Doddsy too.

Griff was ok, that's all. In fact, poor player.

Sent from my Hudl 2 using the onevalefan mobile app

If he was supposed to be a nippy winger, goal machine or a wizard dribbler I would agree he was poor, but he wasnt employed to do any of those jobs.

I think, as the advert goes, he did "exactly what it said on the tin". He did that to the best of his ability, that doesnt make him a poor player just a player with limited ability,

  • 1 year later...

Thought I'd dig up my "Griff-watch" thread again. Posted on Congleton Town's Twitter this week:

"We are delighted to announce that Anthony Griffith has been appointed to the position of assistant manager. Anthony has a wealth of experience within the game and is studying towards his UEFA A licence"

Well done Griff. One for the future at Vale maybe... (He'd sort our tackling out anyway)

I tell you what folks our team is crying out for a Griff type player to help protect our defence from a useless midfield.

Last season “ dross”,this season “useless”.Very complementary Owd.I think Pope should take up that role and have done for a while.Height, strength, shouts a lot, always pointing and waving his arms.Very similar to Griff.

As long as they don’t turn up in a fur coat and no knickers and lie down and get their belly tickled.

Just when you thought I was having a break from Howjy up he pops like a bad smell and as per normal rubbishing Tom Pope. Give it a rest eh?

You can be a very hurtful person sometimes OS.No way am I rubbishing Pope.I stated months ago that I thought he had a future in that position as his days are numbered as a main striker.Paul Scholes started as a striker.Do you get my drift?
