I thought you might like a "where are they now" tale. Congeton Town yesterday announced the signing of Anthony Griffith. Who released the following statement:

"I'm excited to be joining as I'm now living in Congleton and would really like to give something back to the local community.

At 31, I still have a lot to give and am at a point in my career where it's all about enjoying my football which is what I intend to do with The Bears."

What a guy! (And what a signing for a North West Counties team) I cannot wait to see him start flattening some non-league players.

Maybe he’s finally reached his level. One of the worst players to ever pull on a Vale shirt. How he was ever a professional footballer is a complete mystery to me. However, good luck to him.

Whilst not technically gifted, Griff was a great player for us at what he did. Not sure how you can doubt his role? You can't have a team full of technical players with no physicality in it.

I disagree. People say he was good at what he did. But what exactly was that ? I realise he was a “marmite” player, but to me his contribution was nil. Apart from Vale, he played hardly any league games at all. I accept that he tried, but trying does not make you a league standard player. It’s not a personal thing, I just thought he brought nothing to the table. And certainly not goals.

Silly baiting.

Griff was horrendously limited but was excellent at the few things he could do.

A good player in bad times and helped see us over the line in 12/13. A top man too.

The guy is a legend made 160 appearances between 2008 and 2012.

He was always committed to playing hard and apparently terrified the opposition in the tunnel before games.Ok he was limited and his ball distribution not very good but Adams used him wisely as a stopper and was aware of his limitations. If his ball distribution was better he could have played at a higher level .Good luck Griff at Congleton.

Love Griff. Cult hero of mine.

I can’t believe some of the comments on here. Slaying him for not bringing goals to the team?? No ****! He was a thought tackling, 100% committed, defensive midfielder. An absolute genius at what he did.

Whilst he may not have single handedly won games for us, he single handedly stopped us from losing a number of times.

Give me Griff over Kay, Pugh or Tonge in the defensive midfielder role any day of the week.

Best of luck Beast.

I'll ignore the silly comment made early doors.

Never the best technically (I remember the evening he played right-back at Accrington and kicked it out of play, pretty much everytime he touched it, or it at least felt like it!). But, his tackling, and the timing of his tackles was flawless. For such a tough tackler, I never thought he was suspended much. He broke up play well, and his passing was just about ok to knock it off to someone of better ability. I credit him with his share of success in the promotion season. We needed someone like him in there, and whilst I'm sure there are better players out there who do his job, he did a good one for us.

Also, a lovely guy to boot. Met him a couple of times (Player of the year awards, a night out in Congleton) and always chatty and smiling. Delighted he's signed for the Bears and will pop down again when I get chance. They'll love him there.

He did score from 35yards and there was a moment against Notts County when he had two players almost literally climbing on his back trying to get the ball and he held them off.

Limited he was but you wouldn't want to go 50/50 on him.

Wish him all the best and have fond memories of his Vale days.
