Alnwick

Robbie Earle's Perm

It was one of those weird deals that didn't suit anyone really. If he'd stayed I think we'd have stayed up - just. He could then have moved on to be first choice in a lower championship/upper league 1 team. And everyone is happy. Why the crap move to be Rangers reserve keeper I don't know.

Check his pay packet, Toyah, and I think that might give you the answer.

Wasn't actually his first chance, he's played all 3 games in the SLC for them, & according to that thread about him, some fans obviously think he actually kept them in the tournament last round. Must have done alright so far to play all 3 rounds, & others appear to think the result had pretty much nothing to do with the keeper anyway. Part of the report from the QF:

Thistle grew in confidence as Rangers began to look more anxious and almost on the stroke of 90 minutes struck back when Doolan swivelled inside the six-yard box to fire high past Alnwick, who had produced three good saves to deny Partick Thistle striker Conor Sammon over the course of the match.

Still think it was a terrible move though, why would any young aspiring footballer want to sit on the bench higher up the pyramid, rather than prove themselves & be a regular? Only reason I can think of is money.

Have to give Smurf some credit on this one, signed him against Pages wishes and sold him for the only significant transfer fee we have received for a very long time.

It's very odd considering it wasn't that long after he berated Page for having spent all the budget. No wonder Page thought we couldn't afford him.

The version of the story I heard was that Smurthwaite told Page he could get him Alnwick if he wanted but Page was skeptical as to whether he actually could. Maybe the moral of the story is that the best way of getting the chairman to put his hand in his pocket is by using reverse psychology.

I thought that was common knowledge. Smurf recommended Alnwick to Page and Page said "no thanks" but Smurf signed him anyway.

If that's true, it tells you everything you need to know about the mistakes Smurf was making. How many other players did he sign without the manager's agreement? Hooper for starters.

I doubt he was pushed out. My understanding is Rangers could only pay the fee in instalments of 10p a week or something.

Anyway he was a good goalie for us and good luck to the bloke. Probably badly advised.

Absolutely agreed, my mate who is a Forest ST holder said Warburton wants him again and I think that would be a great move for him as keeper is a problem position for them.

Furthermore he needs to get away from that basket case of a fake club, I see their manager has been on the rampage today! 🙄
