There was a programme on Radio 5 on Tuesday about managing in the Football League. At one point they had Michael Brown on the end of the phone talking about his recent departure and his time at Vale. He said two things of significance. "At Port Vale Football Club they have a chairman in Norman Smurthwaite who doesn't understand football." He goes on to speak about the help he got from Colin Garlick. Later he said, in relation to his recruitment, "The most difficult part was the recruitment side - nobody wanted to join Port Vale Football Club." He then talks about the very tight budget he had.

My question would be, why do other teams in our league, who are surely less appealing than ourselves, manage to sign half decent players that want to play for them? It's either we don't pay enough (possibly), our scouting network is shocking (certainly) or we recruit in number rather than quality (definitely). Or maybe it's a mix of all 3? We should be a decent draw for players at this level, as historically we are one of the bigger and better supported teams, so why do we seem to struggle to recruit and then simply make panic buys?

As I said before Chris Birchall said on the radio that the players are on decent wages, and I still can't see how the idea of coming to Port Vale is so unattractive in comparison to other clubs.

 

We should easily be competing in this league. He quoted the promotion season budget but forgets we were in administration. Brown was getting his saucer and milk out and just not admitting he is a crap manager.

Jose Mourihno would have problems turning PVFC around after Smurf and Bruno's calamitous mistakes especially with a crap budget. PVFC after Smurf's chess games of summer 2016 are a club in decline and it's going to take some turning around.

 

Michael brown couldn't do it let's hope Aspin and Rudge can but Smurf has to make good his pledge to provide money to persuade quality players to come to PVFC so that the unthinkable doesn't happen.

Smurthwaite has always pledged money for signings.
