Why we need Neil Aspin.

For those moaning about Aspin being like Pulis. WAKE UP! Pulis and his style established our neighbours into a steady premier league side. For those lamenting the "defensive minded, organised style"... WAKE UP! Look at what Dyche has done with Burnley using a similar style.

For me, this kind of football is EXACTLY what we currently need. We are bottom of League 2 for gods sake. Organisation and becoming hard to beat are precisely what we should be looking for from the new guy. If we were in the national league right now, there's a fairly strong argument to suggest we'd be bottom half with this side and they way we are playing at the moment.

I suggest beggars don't be choosers. Neil Aspin looks a good fit to me. With or without his Vale connections.

Get it done!

Adams played that style and it generated some of the best atmospheres of the last ten years. The stoke-on-trent crowd likes hardworking, hard tackling direct football as a rule. Look at the atmosphere at the 365, dropped significantly since Pulis left.

As long as we play any style well enough, we'll be fine in this terrible league. Why pick the most dour football available? As for 'beggars can't be choosers', even with the numpty upstairs we should still be a relatively enticing prospect. Our 'natural' position is in the league above this and there is a little untapped potential in the fanbase. I wish the fans had gotten behind a campaign to get Richard Money or Chris Powell in the way they did with Aspo.

Why don't you wake up and smell the coffee. We are hoping for Aspin because with our idiot of a Chairman do you really think that Powell or Money would come to us. I am sure there would be more fans that prefer to have someone liked Steve Cotterill (before his Brum appointment) or Nigel Adkins too, but let's be realistic we are not an enticing prospect for any of the better managers available especially with Smurthwaite at the helm. I am convinced that he is as disliked around the football league as he is with the Vale fan base (REP apart).

That for me is why Aspin is actually a coup for us at this time.

Loved Aspo as a player and if he's half as good as a manager he'll do alright.

Morale at the club is the biggest issue we have and if he can sort that out I believe we can get out of trouble.

They say never meet your heroes but I did just that at an event some years ago, when I sat at the same table as Aspo and Goober and they both didn't disappoint.

Good luck Neil, you will have my full support.

"Morale" the biggest issue really

How about things like owner ,poor players no goally etc etc etc plus people like you as indicated by your post who can't see the wood for the trees imho 😜😜

Our best crowds in the last half century were when we were playing skillfull passing football with wingers. We've always sneered at Sjoke with their outdated boring long-ball nonsense. People berated (and still berate) Page for being boring despite him breaking the record for home performances. But hey, Aspin played for us and was tough and Steve Foley blah blah blah so we'll chuck our principles and aspirations in the bin.

No this "He’ll probably give you what you need in your current position.Defence minded, organised and discipline-"

Thats exactly what I want

Me too, he’s got to get the best out of what players we have. So if he makes us hard to break down, tough tackling 1-0 specialists, il be delighted

I agree about the chairman making us less desirable for managers but Money, for example, has been out of work since resigning in the summer and, IMO, would add far more for us than Aspin. I don't know how you could describe the latter as a 'coup' when no-one else seems to have been in for him.

If Aspin brings back football that is anything like you say, I'm in. Not sure I've seen much hard work this season, & I definitely don't recall any hard tackles, aside from Tonge's whoopsy against Crewe.

Anything to see us get some points, & I couldn't really give a toss about pretty football, I'd rather pretty results. It is a risk, but in our position, there aren't many managers who wouldn't be, & with the guy at the top, those are probably out of our price range.

I disagree. The only 3 comments on their thread that mention Aspin's style of football all say words to the effect of dour and defensive. Managerial stats tell you nothing about his preferred style of play, particularly when a significant part of that career has been spent managing a team at a 'false' level.
