Director of football

I don't like the role of Director of Football and can't honestly think of a case where it's actually worked. There always seems to be conflict between the Director who's generally an old hand who's been there and done that and wants to do things his way and the manager who has his own ideas. And I'm never sure what the Director of Football role actually means and what he actually does and I get the impression that half the time, neither do they.

And in this particularly case I'm pretty sure that Smurfwaite, a man who admits himself that he doesn't know football, likes the sound of a Director of Football but doesn't have a clue exactly how the new role will fit into the running of the club.

It worked for Stoke aka Mr Rudge

If scouting is part of the DOFs job description you can forget about Adams. He never went out and watched matches when he was at the Vale he never went out and watched matches so I can't see him doing it now. Rudge, on the other hand, used to spend midweek evenings watching matches. He was renowned for his in depth knowledge of players in the lower divisions. That's why he was so successful in bringing in the right player for a particular role after a player had been sold. Given his advancing years, though, I doubt whether he'd want to spend his time nowadays sitting in cold football stadiums running the rule over potential signings.

Why are the the guinea pig for another Smurf ego experiment?

Why can't he just do the obvious thing and shell out on an experienced manager?

Why does he feel the need to be different? He made the claim that we're not a 'sexy' club so we have to take different approaches, but can anyone honestly say there's any sexy clubs in League 2?

We're in a hole, we need the obvious solution, and yet again Mr Smurthwaite is playing games with us. There's no need for a Director of Football in League 2, with things going swimmingly for Swindon last year.

"He's learnt from his mistakes" - he clearly hasn't. Why can't he just be a normal chairman and appoint a sensible manager?

Can anyone hand on heart say they trust Micky Adams with recruitment, youth integration, and being able to withhold himself from interfering? The man is a renowned disciplinarian who does things his way (Notts County transfer list), and now we're supposed to believe he'll cede control to some cheap understudy manager?

Micky as DoF is no more than an effort to win the fans back, short-term.

Why doesn't that surprise me

Personally I think this would be great news for the club.

Do you know what a DoF does? Can you explain to me how the 'backs to the wall, win-now' approach that has served Micky so well is suited to it? Micky's a great but limited manager; his record with youth is fairly woeful and I can't imagine him keeping in the background considering the controlling manager he thrives on being.

We need an experienced manager who can keep us in the League, not part-time Micky Consultancy Ltd overseeing a young manager that desperate for a job he's willing to work with a DoF.

In my view he brings nothing to the table. During his time in charge he brought in players 'off the shelf' who had played under him at previous clubs, he displayed a dislike for promoting young players to the first team squad and rarely,if ever, went out to watch matches himself and run the rule over potential recruits. Another Smurthwaite debacle is on the horizon!!
