Didn't he suffix it with 'don't believe BS' or something? I think NS will want to get the fans onside and even a brief glance at this forum would have convinced him not to offer the job to Askey. I want Powell from the names mentioned although I'm sure there'll be some surprise names that will have applied. Obviously not as many that would have applied if we weren't a running joke in football circles but there you go.

Powell is the man I would like to see. Plus think he'd work well with Micky Adams DoF.

Radio Stoke reported this morning that Askey was interviewed for the job at the end of last week.

They then reckoned that Smurthwaite had ruled him out, purely from his "take a chill pill" post on OVF the other day.

To me, that wasn't Smurthwaite ruling him out and he did not state that Askey wouldn't get the job.

Then story repeated on BBC Sport. Just shows how believable news is, or not.

The National League is basically a 5th Division these days in all but name/status and with some of the teams in there (Tranmere, Orient, Hartlepool, Wrexham et al) Macc probably aren't even considered one of the bigger sides in that league anymore despite having had a spell as a league club. Especially when you throw in a number of bankrolled sides(AFC Fylde, Eastleigh as two examples who've come from the depths of the pyramid in recent years plus the likes of Crawley and Fleetwood who've made the league). That said Askey probably hasn't done a bad job and kept a steady hand on the tiller at Macc when other sides of similar or bigger ilk have slipped into the Conference North(Stockport, York, Kiddy), I'd guess he's probably got an average budget for that level all in all.

On the otherside of the coin I can see why some Macc fans would be not overly impressed, traditionally they have always been a higher reaches of non-league club going back 25/30 years and to when it was re-election/not a proper promotion/relegation system to the league, I believe they were always around the Alliance(pre-cursor to conference and national league) with the likes of Wycombe, Yeovil, Stevenage and have had a 10 years+ spell as a League club which will always bring with it more expectation.

My own view on Askey is as someone posted the other day a case of possibly the right man but wrong time for Vale. He may turn out a good manager in the league at some point but do we really want to be throwing a manager with no league experience into a fight to stay in League Two?

I've yet to be convinced Adams is coming. The stuff in his book suggested he'd had enough of Vale and surely if he was coming we would know by now. Perhaps people are putting two and two together after his presence at the game on Saturday - he certainly wasn't sitting with Smurf. I was at the game as well but can assure you I'm not the new manager despite my outstanding qualifications.

I am just as concerned with the risks, which is the biggest risk? A Prem League player or a manager from the 5th Division? That may be tested. I would like to know the shortlist or even the realistic applicants. Someone who has proved himself in L1 or L2 is preferable, we will have to wait and see.

Maybe you're right I don't know just keeping it as an option atm. One of many possibilities.
