Can't help thinking Gunning has been signed as the club expect Smith to leave by the end of the transfer window, otherwise the signing doesn't make sense when we are very short in other areas of the pitch.

 

Gunning looks like he plays on the edge and can see a few red cards from him this season.

I doubt Smith will go anywhere, & it wouldn't be the first time we sign extra in some positions when we still need a first choice for others. Hoping to see one or two more in this week, possibly a trialist tomorrow?

Its another player in a defensive role who can cover a couple of positions if we need him to (centre half and left back), although a new left back is a priority I think. The fact hes only been signed on a short term deal maybe speaks volumes about him just coming in as cover.

I basically see him as a Knops replacement. Can play left back if needed and cover at centre half. We still need a designated left back though.

 

A solid, athletic, left back is the priority now for me. Then some energy in CM, then a couple more wingers and maybe a back up RB if I'm being greedy.

 

Gunning can play there as he is left footed but I wouldn't want him playing there for say 10 games straight as he won't offer anything going forward like a specialist left back would. He would be like when Stoke used to play Huth at RB!

 

If the new LB is unavailable, I'd imagine Kelly will cover, then if Kelly is also unavailable that's when Gunning would play there.

Has Gunning ever actually played left back before or have we just stuck him out there cuz he can kick the ball with his left peg?
