Premier League 2017/18 Season

I find it interesting that Stoke are spending no dosh. I wonder if Peter Coates knows something about the finances of Sky sports and its ability to keep its contract. Another ITV digital style collapse would cause chaos at the top level of English football.

If Liverpool are to have a chance of being successful this coming season they desperately need another few players. I think Salah will prove to be an excellent signing, Solanke could be an absolutely bargain in time while Andrew Robertson (although not official yet) is a good left-back and is better long term than continuing to play James Milner there. But players like Van Dijk and Naby Keita are also required.

Chelsea have bought sensibly as of yet in the signings of Ridiger and Bakayoko, and if reports are correct and they are close to signing Aubmeyang (I would have loved him at Liverpool) then you have to say that along with Man City they are looking the team to beat again. Arsenal like Liverpool still need another 3 top players at least, and the same goes for United.

I see Sky are completely revamping their Sports Channels this summer because of plummeting subscriptions.

England won the under 19 Euro Championship, won the under 20 World Championship and reached the semi final of the Euro under 21 Championship this Summer. It looks like the FA investment in facilities and coaching is reaping rewards. But these players need to be exposed to regular top level football in the Premier League or abroad if clubs and country at senior level are to get the maximum benefit as early as possible and to see if a really great player can emerge from a good pack.

It just won't happen. Clubs in the Prem view being in the Prem as the number 1 priority over everything due to the riches on offer. Money and greed has destroyed the game.

They won't give youngsters the opportunity to be inconsistent and make mistakes (as all young players do). No way would Rashford have broken into the team under Mourinho, he'd be on loan at Cardiff this season!

Man City are always banging on about how good their academy is, then go and spend £50m on a RB and another rumoured £40m on a LB. Same can be said for Stoke really who are spending around £9m a year on their academy but none of them will ever play 50+ games for the club.

The majority of club academy players are now being loaned out to either lower PL or Championship clubs with the intention of selling them on.

Bundesliga clubs don't have the luxury of Sky money and so have no choice but to develop their own players which seems to be working for their national teams.

Then you get Harry Redknapp wanting to sign Ashley Cole, Stewart Downing and Robbie Keane rather than try a young Brummie or a lad from a PL club.

Interestingly for me whilst subscriptions in the UK have dipped there has been a dramatic drop in viewers per live PL match. SKY put this down to showing too many matches, overkill. Also increasingly viewers are willing to almost pay per match with the 'day pass' services that are available meaning they don't want an always available sports package.

Shifting demographs

What effect this is all having on revenue and hence profits I don't know..that's the bottom line.

West Ham have made two good signings in Hart and Hernandez, so long as both are finalised. Had Sturridge left I'm sure Klopp would have contemplated spending 13 million for him, as he's at a good age (29) and has already proven he has an eye for goal over here during his time at United. In today's market he's an absolute steal.

They've just agreed a £24m deal with Sjoke for Arnautovic as well.
