Good try. Stuart Jump was with Palace at the time but didn't play in this game. Incidentally, did you ever see Ronnie Allen play? I didn't, but I used to work with a WBA fan who said that he was the finest player to play for WBA. If it hadn't been for that penalty in 1954 my father would have agreed !

I'm not THAT old! I did hear a lot about Ronnie Allen being a brilliant player though.

He was great, even better for WBA, played for Palace as player-manager at Vale Park, I think they won 2-0, and promoted that season. Some were disappointed that he did not come back as player manager at Vale. It was the ref who gave the penalty outside the area.

Yes, only time I wish I was 10yrs older ! To have been at the semi-final must have been magical, if not extremely disappointing. Seen footage of the penalty on TV and the decision is outrageous ! Not that I'm bitter! Is that the closest to the final we will ever get ? In my lifetime, quite probably ! Anyway thanks for the Ronnie Allen info.

Liverpool had a galaxy of stars in the cup game here in 1964. Callaghan, Hunt, St John, Thompson. Also Owen and Fowler here in the 90s wasn't it? Both cup games.

The greatest player I ever saw live - several times - was George Best. No contest. Miles better than Charlton.

I also saw Ajax at Stoke in 1974. Although Cruyff had left they still had the likes of Krol, Suurbier, both Muhrens, Rep, Neeskins and Haan - all part of that great Dutch team of the seventies. Krol, that night, gave the best centre half performance I've ever seen. Pure class.

In a league game? When was that?

As part of an admin team who checks posts you would see I have since made another post explaining I didn't realise it was league games.

Anyway, whilst people are talking about cup games now, the most surprisingly good player I ever saw was Ray Parlour. Always seemed a bit of a donkey on tv but watching him live that night against Arsenal he was superb.
