442: worst ever Vale player

Ah yes Kevin Steggles another one of our utter rubbish full backs.

 

If I remember correctly we got him from Ipswich and upon hearing this I was misguidedly optimistic. How wrong I was. He had the ability to kick the ball into touch from anywhere on the pitch and usually when under no pressure whatsoever. So much so that I wondered if Ipswich had a Rugby team and Kevin Steggles had Toblerones for feet.

Some really interesting choices. Brings back lots of memor... nightmares.

 

I think if a player scores an important/good goal or at least has 1 decent performance then they must be saved from the wooden spoon. I do recall even Exodus playing a decent match in midfield. Can't remmeber the opposition but he was actually ok. Never played there again.

 

As for managers making the worst signings ... Dean Glover. Has to be. Sinnott did sign some good players. Gannon bought back Pope. But Glover ... some of his signings: McKenzie and Brown in particular would have been useless as corner flags.

 

I checked and Stephane Pounewatchy played 2 games. It was Robin Bernsten who played 45mins. Had a barney at half time and left for Norway.

I honestly think I managed to suppress the memory of Craig James, Christ he was terrible.

 

My vote- Colin Miles.

I remember Miles was abysmal in that heavy cup defeat at Hereford. He wasn't even the worst left back in that squad though in my opinion. At least, unlike Jason Talbot, he could stay on the pitch for 90 minutes!

Chris Slater was clearly out of his depth.

 

Thoroughly agree with Chris Slater. I still carry the mental scars from watching the 4 - 1 home loss to Macc Town. I have that date September 20th 2008 forever burned into my memory as one of, if not the most disappointing home performances I've ever seen. Chris Slater’s performance at centre half was possibly one of the worst I’ve ever witnessed from a pro footballer. Doesn’t matter that he came from Chasetown, this is about playing in a Vale shirt. He was dreadful.

Seeing these comments I wanted to take a look back at the season Lee Sinnott came in and took us down. Take a look at Wiki Port Vale 2007-2008 season, it makes pretty awful reading. That was a bad season with 9 wins only. Looking at the Squad there is some real dross in there, Shane Tudor is another prominent underachiever that springs to mind.

Remember only just a John (selwyn)Froggatt think he played upfront , used to stand in lorne st hamil with me old man and i do remember him getting stick during a game from our section and he reacted by sticking the V's up dont think he lasted too long after that .

I too was at the Hereford debacle. Miles a good shout he went over like a big heffer for at least one of the goals. This was the beginning of the end for Tin Foyle.

 

Another choice is Nathan Lowndes, I think we may have even paid a fee for the clown!

I haven't been around long enough to recognise some of the names being mentioned on here but by the sounds of some of the things said about them it's probably a good thing! I would say for me so far it has to be Exodus. Tommy Frazer was someone i didn't rate but i don't think he was bad enough to be considered in this but i do have a funny little story about him. When i used to go to my grandads we always used to talk to his neighbours who were also vale fans about football. One day their granddaughter, i'd say she would have been around 8-10, came over and said "We've got Tosser!" (If that word gets filtered it's the same word as hosser but replace the H with a T). It took us a while to work out what she meant but it turned out she was that used to people shouting "tosser" at him that she thought it was his name.
