Port Vale match against Milton Keynes is called off

Simon Inglis's book Football Grounds of Britain has WBA 1st, Vale 2nd, Oldham 3rd. The clay is the bigger issue, but that's the geology of the Potteries! The bigger issue to me is why a referee would call off a match 6 hours beforehand when the weather forecast is for a sunny day with temperatures well above freezing.

Oh well, at least we didn't drop any points today.

Pitch would have been playable at 3pm.

Early pitch inspection because the ref had to come from miles away so they bought in a local ref.

Should have left it until time.

MK Dons only an hour away.

Mk Dons only an hour away? Have you got a helicopter.

According to Answers.com, West Brom is 168m above sea level, Port Vale 160m and Oldham 155m.

There again, mfd.com says West Brom is 552 feet above sea level, Oldham 526 and Vale Park 520.

So it's anybody's guess!

There was a massive debate about this a few years ago on here. It ended with someone actually posting up the OS maps. Conveniently a contour runs through Boundary Park (somewhere near the corner flag).

VP is definitely above this contour. Best estimates were that VP is about 6-12ft above Boundary Park. Unanimous agreement between 2nd-ers and 3rd-ers was eventually reached on this, believe it or not.

I suppose we need someone equipped with an altimeter to visit both grounds and measure at pitch level, or was that done? Sponsors anyone?

I never trust those thermometers you get in car displays, however...

There always seems to be a point travelling between Leek and Manchester, usually around Macc's ground, where the temperature dips or rises dramatically. Either them things are wrong or it's the microclimate / Cheshire gap kicking in.

Having the foothills of the Peaks to the North and the Cheshire Plain to the West does us no good.
