Port Vale match against Milton Keynes is called off

News Feed

Recommended Posts

The only game called off in the entire of the UK down to conference North/South level

I don't think it's the club at fault here. It seems that what the ref says goes. For what it's worth it's about 5 degrees here and sunny...in other words a perfect day for football.

Something is amiss.

Pretty sure that's not what he asked....

He asked me why I thought the game was off. Well I think it's off because that's the ref's decision. I was as surprised as anyone that it was off because the pitch has been covered since Thursday and I thought the covers protected the pitch down to -3C. I expected that the layer of snow would have insulated it even further. It hasn't dropped that low around here for the last couple of nights. But if the ref says it's off, that's it, it's off.

Just how low did it get last night? You'd hope that the covers, plus the layer of snow from the previous night would insulate the pitch. Unless the pitch was already frozen during Friday day. It must also have been severe enough for the referee to decide that there was no chance of the pitch improving as the day wore on.

See above^^

Thanks for that, Jacko. I do wonder if the Football League might be asking a few questions about our inability to get the game on.

As far as I can see we are to date still the only team in the top 5 divisions in the country to have our game called off.

I presume they are going ahead at places like Shrewsbury, Crewe and Walsall, not to mention all the other places down south where the weather has been much worse than here for the past 48 hours.

I think we're all very disappointed, frustrated and quite frankly amazed that the game is off as none of us living in the area can believe that the pitch would not be thawed out and playable by 3.00. Normally we can see with our own eyes, step out into our back gardens and appreciate the frozen turf and freezing temperature but this afternoon it's 5 degrees and supposed to be sunny at 3 and 4 o'clock. It seems very odd.

Besides, I'll have to accompany my wife now to the shops and think about those odd jobs that I haven't got around to in the past few weeks.

We are the club playing at the highest altitude, without undersoil heating, in the football league. Doubt if it would be economic, even in the areas prone to frost, worthy of a tweet by a tweeter?

Would they not have undersoil heating having been in the top league in the 1990s

I'm not certain but could they afford to even turn it on.

Seems waterlogging was the cause. Brolly, not snow shoes required for later.

So if the covers were on how did the pitch get waterlogged?

If it Was melting snow surely the snow could have been moved before it melted.

The pitch has been sand slitted to help the drainage.

Waterlogged at 9am may be playable at 3pm considering the weather forecast.

Another rearrange midweek game as well as the Coventry game.

Blame it on the clay pitch, one more reason for a new ground. Thanks for that, I will drop the Vale to number 3 in the altitude ranking.
