Graham Taylor

Recommended Posts

I remember reading that when Steve Brooker was here on loan Taylor received a few good offers for him from other clubs but he turned them all down because he'd already given his word to Horton that Vale had first option at 15k.

That is absolutely accurate, and a lesson to the people who are in positions of power in football today. The man deserves great credit for that act, which helped Vale enormously.

An excellent manager who did great things, especially for Watford and Villa, but for for whom it never quite happened for England. He did make mistakes with the national team but he also struggled with injuries to key players and couldn't really keep a settled side.

The Impossible Job documentary, apart from being unintentionally hilarious and full of Accidental Partridge moments, had one or two poignant moments and left you feeling sympathy with him in the end.

I was lucky enough to meet Graham at a bit of a corporate do. The company I was working for had a product launch for the 2010 World Cup and Graham came in, posed for photos, signed autographs, did a Q&A session and reffed a light hearted penalty shootout. He was everything that everyone has said about him in the tributes. Away from the TV cameras there was something about him that shone through, as though he'd had the edge taken off him. He was warm, relaxed, and you could understand why he'd been such a successful manager. I could really imagine wanting to play for him and being part of his dressing room if I'd been a professional footballer.

Away from that I always found him a very thoughtful and articulate pundit, particularly on Five Live. One thing I remember him saying was him taking issue with someone who said the old cliché 'he'd done the hard part' after a bad miss, his argument was that sticking the ball in the net was the hard part and explaining the value of a composed and natural finisher.

Most of all, what always came across was that he always retained that child-like enthusiasm about the game we have/had ourselves, and didn't allow himself to become too jaded by professionalism and disappointment. At least not on the outside.

RIP.

Good man and good club manager but it didn't happen for him at International level. He certainly didn't get the run of the ball at International level, the Norwegian goal at Wembley and the events surrounding Ronald Koeman and his frree kick goal in Rotterdam are still etched in my memory of England catastrophies.

There's been some lovely comments about him from all over the football world, including last night on 5 Live.

He seemed like a warm, generous, genuine, and personable bloke which is the way we'd all like to be remembered, I suppose. But so many who reach the top appear to lose the common touch and live in a bubble. All credit to him.
