Championship Striker? Alex Jones? Smurf On The Radio

There are calculated gambles and stupid gambles. It's like betting, a calculated gamble would be lets say Chelsea to beat Hull at home. A stupid gamble would be for Leek Town to win the FA Cup.

This foreign experiment was a stupid gamble. We ALL knew it and voiced our concerns from the start. We've watched football for years and know what is needed at our level.

Appointing Bruno because his mates might lend us some decent players is barmy. How is that a sustainable long term strategy? Would we expect to do this next year too? What if his mates get sacked/move clubs?

I like Smurf but he doesn't half lose his mind sometimes and does some crazy things. He needs a lot of help with the football strategy side of things.

Please stop blaming/threatening the fans though.

Sadly, it wasn't all of the fan base who voiced their concerns.

Some blindly follow every decision the man makes and will not have a bad word said about him.

Far more prosaically, of the young players currently in the first team, there isn't one who I would not keep.

They all look decent players to me.

The problem is lack of experience.

We should only be playing 3 or 4 of the youngsters at a time, not all at the same time.

What is happening is really unfair on them and could shatter their confidence and careers.

Which is pretty much what Brown was saying last week. I can imagine he's somewhat bemused at Bruno's tactics, systems and selections.

Agreed. Plus you've got the relative inexperience of some of the buys from abroad too. This for me is where the experience of players like Grant, Purkiss, Thomas and Foley is essential. Unfortunately they've been out and its why I am a big critic of the decision to force out some of the experienced pros in pre-season. Its left us thin in that regard. The English games tally of our recent starting line ups can't amount to many matches. Imagine if we're in a position over xmas where players like Turner or Gibbons have to come in and start, fantastic for them but its a difficult situation to be in too. Its a fine balance between getting the right blend of youth and experienced league one players, we seem to have gone too far in one way for my liking.

Attendances are down across the bottom 2 leagues at 90 percent of clubs. Is that Smurfs fault too?

Of course not and for that I will withdraw the world 'solely' from my previous post. I'm well aware this is in part a league-wide problem. However to cast aside our problem with attendances as a 'whole of football problem' would be to ignore some of the issues the club is facing.

Namely for me that he has made mistakes running the football side of the club and also that he has failed to understand the market that Port Vale sits in. Disposable income is at a premium in the area, but prices are at their highest. Bleed the regulars dry, pay little attention to bringing new fans in. Classic failures.

I'm not so sure. 1200 people found the money to go to Bolton away (£26 for most) plus beer money etc.

I think football as a weekly habit is lacking in appeal for many people both in and outside of The Potteries. Cost is part of it, but there are so many more options these days.

There's 7 of our family going on Boxing Day, including young fans of the future. However we are really struggling to keep them interested this season as they've been bored with all the slow tip tap football. My worry is if we can't generate a buzz these youngsters will walk away. It's bad enough steering them away from the PL stuff down the A500.We also take them away and that's another story!!

Understand your point. Compare the two - Bolton away and a few beers with your mates via Manchester or 3 home game tickets? Seems like lots of people prefer the former option when money dictates. Some away games are seen as a day out above anything else. I can see the attraction above coming to our ground where the atmosphere is terrible.

You're right too. There's other things for people to spend their money on. When football was cheaper, maybe they could afford to do other things as well. I get the feeling from people I've spoken to about this that it's Vale, having a day out with the kids somewhere or having a night on the tiles. People are choosing option two or three because they feel they enjoy them more. Some of the issues we have relate to the actual cost of coming in, and others relate to the perceived 'value for money' element. Both have to be addressed in my opinion.
