Slovakia v England

For Us All

Let's be honest though. This team has to show massive improvement to compete against the best teams. We finally got a break at the end but there seems no-one in that side willing to take a chance. All too predictable, which will again get us through the qualifiers against poor opposition, but nothing more.

I wouldn't say Slovakia are poor. They're not a top team obviously but they are a well drilled and organised side, with one outstanding player in Marek Hamsik, and have beaten the likes of Germany and Italy in the last year or two. But the pattern of our play was no different at all, along with the likes of Kane not performing anything like enough to warrant a place in the starting 11.

That said, only one team deserved to win the game and I can't remember Hart having to do anything for 90 minutes, which is probably a good thing.

Something needs to be done about Rooney. Until Henderson was substituted we were effectively playing three defensive midfielders against a team that was parking the bus. Alli made a difference when he came on because he got at the Slovakia defence, even if it was a man short.

Rooney seems to want to be the old fashioned "midfield general". But this is not what is required of an attacking midfielder. It slows England down and allows the opposition to re-group. The problem now is that Allardyce has made him captain. Imo, John Stones did a better job in midfield than Rooney, some Alan Hansen type moves there!

Not sure how Kane started, given he's completely lacking in confidence and hasn't scored yet in the PL.

Summing up, it was a very lazy victory, devoid of creativity and organisation.

Slovakia are a decent team and set their tactics to play defensive and counter attcking football even though they were the home side, England were set up similar hence the stalemate. It's difficult to break down two banks of 4 or 5 and very easy to be caught on the counter.

England kept their shape and cool against some thuggish players and Skrtel got his just rewards, how the player with the disgraceful two footed tackle on Llallana (?) around 70 mins stayed on the pitch is a mystery, the ref bottled it. This system or 4-4-2 suites England better than the 4-3-3 of Hodgson.

Llalana, Rooney and Stirling are all there to support Kane and drop back to form a 4-5-1 when needed but the purpose of the systen is to be solid and not concede. I don't agree with the criticism of Rooney as from an England perspective he was the hub of the team and controlled the game, brilliant player and lead like a true captain.

Well done Sam, well done England.

I disagree. Kane needed support and Rooney was supposed to provide that. Instead he seemed to want to play very deep, isolating an already short of confidence Kane.

Only when Alli came on did we start to exert some pressure, because he provided the link between the midfield and attack that Rooney should have been providing, and was willing to run at their defence.

If Rooney is going to play where he did, then one of Henderson or Dier shouldn't have started. But Sam said that Rooney would play a more advanced role and he simply did not do that.

Rooney did absolutely nothing most other midfielders couldn't do. When you have Stones to bring the ball out from the back you don't need Rooney anywhere near his own penalty box, it's a ridiculous tactic. Either play him behind the striker or preferably not at all.
